Course Transfer from UCC

Hello - I've posted an almost identical thread in the UCD section, but as I am keen on both courses, and applying to both keeping my options open and all that, I figured I should post here as well.

I am just about finishing up in second year Arts in UCC. I'm majoring in English with a minor in History. I have decent grades and all that, no disasters in that respect. However, due to UCC messing around with modules and changing stuff ever since I started, I am seriously unhappy with the course keen to do arts elsewhere - I've done plenty of research to ensure that, and have even said it to lecturers who advised a transfer if that's what I wanted (which it is).

So ideally, I would like to apply to transfer to Arts in NUIM and start in second year again, rather than start over. In my leaving cert I got 380 so I have plenty of points.

I'd like to know if I can transfer back to the start of second year in NUIM even though I'm already a second year in UCC. I'd do the same subjects and have a good exam record so I would hope that I could. Obviously I can't go straight to 3rd year. For the record, out of curiousity I applied to Trinity Arts with the exact same question and they said that yes, I could start in second year (they even said if there was anything extra I would need they'd let me do extra courses). The only reason I can't go is that I didn't get enough points. Seeing as I have more than the original required points for Arts in NUIM, I would hope that this would not be the stumbling block there.

I'm pretty set on doing this course properly and think I have a really good chance, so any help would be MUCH appreciated, I'm yearning for knowledge!

You should contact the admissions office at 708 3430 / 3578 and they will be able to go through the transfer procedure with you, one thing you should bear in mind is that if you do end up going back to 2nd year you will have to pay the tuition fees plus registration for the course. Not sure how many credits you have in both subjects but in Maynooth you do 30 in each subject in 2nd year so you might end up having to do only some modules to make them up to 30 in each but you could ask if you could go straight into 3rd year, best of luck with what ever you choose.

    Thanks for the advice!

In UCC my subjects are split into 40 credits of English, and 20 credits of History - so that's more in English than they do in Maynooth it would seem. I didn't know they allowed people to go into 3rd year, do they?

I know that you can pick credits from other subjects here is the link to the relevant page on the website http://www.nuim.ie/courses/outside-modules.shtml. When you read this it may be possible for you to transfer into 3rd year, I would suggest that you contact the admissions office and they will be able to confirm if for you, it may take a couple of days as they in turn would have to check it with each of the relevant Heads of Department but I would say you would probably be able to go into 3rd year.
