Sony Laptop not Booting up

    Hi,

I purchased my sony viao about 15months ago and it has been working fine up until a week or so ago (aside from heating up quite a lot however I did purchase a notebook cooler in an effort to combat this).

First off I hit a blue screen a week ago while gaming on my laptop. I had quite a few programs open and was alt-tabbing a lot so I just hoped at the time I had been forcing too much out of it.

Today (again while gaming) the screen went a light shade of blue and then it shut down. I rebooted and the screen was flickering but mostly black, there were a few beeps (i think, I can't recall exactly) so I shut it down

I wait about 5mins and rebooted, the screen remained black, the power came on but the computer refused to boot. It has remained like that ever since.

Now when I switch it on all I get is the power led, Bluetooth led, the HD led comes on for a second and then remains off.

I was wondering if anyone could advise me as to whether it is a HM/ MB / GC problem. I have a mountain of college work on it also with no back-ups for the past 2weeks.

Any help at all is appreciated.

Bear in mind my experience is limited to Desktops a few years old at this stage but it sounds like a memory fault to me. If you have access to the inside of the laptop try reseating the memory modules and see what happens.
Disconnect the battery before doing this and connect yourself to ground (bare metal waterpipe will do) to prevent static damage to the delicate memory modules.
Beeps usually indicate a POST (power on self test) problem. Without the necessary card to read the code, usually written to I/O port 80 on the desktops it is difficult to tell what the problem is.

    Thank for the post.

I tried as you said and after removing 1 of the modules the computer started to boot however the screen remained black with flickering lines every now and then. I shut it down, removed the other module and replaced the old one. This returned the laptop to the previous state of not booting. After swapping them out one more time the computer remained the same.

I was in to a shop today to pick-up a docking station for the HD and the guy there said it might be a graphics card issue. I then dropped by PC World, they offered to look at it (for €60) and if they couldn't find anything wrong with it would send it to the UK (for a further €300) and replace whatever needs fixing (unless it is beyond eco. repair).

So back to square 1 however at least I've managed to get my college files back today (thanks to the powers that be).

    Thanks for your advice
