Hello. I intend to get the medical to pursue a career in avaition. I know that my eyesight is perfect and am concerned about my hearing because i,ve done some part time bar work in a local nightclub over the last couple of years. I am just wondering if there is anywhere in the south east (waterford/wexford) to get your hearing checked. also does anybody know of anywhere else apart from the matter to do the medical exam. there will be more questions coming so i hope there are some people around this forum that have experience flying or are pilots. thank you for your time.

Only the Mater do Class 1 medicals.

You could go to your nearest Aviation medical examiner. He can't do a class 1 but would be more knowledgeable than the average GP and be able to advise you. My doctor is an AME which I find convenient sometimes.

Here's the list from the IAA website.http://www.iaa.ie/index.jsp?p=208&n=207

Incidentally why the reference to the UK class 1 in your title? Why not an IAA class 1.

I was looking into doing the flight training at a place in southern spain, and their reference to the medical was the uk class 1. i'm sure that the medicals are of all the same standard under the JAA whether it is an irish or uk one.

    Hi Bobby,

Yes you are correct in saying that the medical is the same under JAA ruling, however I have heard of guys who have completed their class 1 in the Mater and were required to do a conversion for the UK CAA when applying to FTE.

what is involved in the conversion? having to go and do the test in the uk also? i know that you can get the medical in the uk right next to gatwick airport for £317 so at that rate i would be better off going to gatwick and get it done there in the first place if i'm definitly going to go to FTE?

I went to FTE with an IAA class 1. While there, you will have to renew it and this cis done with a CAA AME in Gibraltar.

Just ask Dr. Roodenburg in the Mater to e-mail the CAA with your details before you go for your renewal. Didn't cost me anything extra as far as I can remember.

    hi bobby,

The doctors in the Keogh practice on ballybricken should be able to help you. One of the guys there - coleman i think is a class 2 medical examiner (iaa).

re - class one - roodenbury should be able to give you the full medical report so that you can bring this to the caa and convert your class one medical.

where you going to train in spain? FTE or Jerez?

    Think he's looking at FTE-Jerez.

Yes, Jerez seems to be more popular generally .

Presume he is doing it privately.

Converting an IAA to a CAA class one is very simple. You can do the Class one in the Mater, get the IAA to send some info to the CAA and you pay the CAA a charge of circa £25 and it's done. New CAA medical cert will be sent to you quite quick.

yea its FTE i'm lookin at doin it in allright. they are based in Jerez are they not?

@FlutterinBantam, when you say that i'm doin it privatly you mean i'm payin for it out of me own pocket? I havent found any airlines that are prepared to pay for it anyway.

@Cessna_Pilot, what about doin the medical in the uk at gatwick, would i still have to get it sent to the CAA to do the training at jerez?

Well you can of course do the Initial Class one in Gatwick with the CAA. All the paperwork is taken care of there and then.

Might be worth a cheap Ryanair return trip for a day to do it.
