UK's the Daily Mail have the run of pictures, sadly, pancreatic cancer isn't the most forgiving type of cancer to have..

God, I saw him on TV only a few months ago, he's gone downhill a lot. Poor guy, hope he gets through this.

I was shocked when I saw those pictures, I knew people suffered greatly as a result of the cancer and the treatment as I've seen a family member go through the same thing.

Does anyone reckon he'll have the same effect on men as Jade Goody had on women, encouraging them to get checked ?

I don't understand why you think it's strange? I also don't understand why you posted in in After Hours. Why do you hate Patrick Swayze?

    Harsh dude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,070 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

No, Jade Goody was never meant to raise awreness. She was a tool for profits, that is all.

I'm sure Patrick won't be having his funeral broadcast.

    but

I do think that men's attitude towards cancer could be better. We always think there's nothing wrong with us unless it's the man-flu

I suppose strange was the wrong word to use, I dunno. It just solidifies the idea that celebrities are not "untouchable" or God like the way some people make them out to be. For example, when I saw pictures of Stallone recently I never knew he looked so old, being used to seeing him in Rambo movies and the likes. The same can be said for Bruce Willis when comparing him to his days in Die Hard.

He has pancreatic ca., doesn't he?
AFAIK (could be wrong here) there isn't a screening test for that cancer (regular ERCP/CT maybe :p).
(Fairly sure LFT/tumour marker levels are too non-specific).

Also, his cancer is obviously gender non-specific.

You might be thinking along the lines of
prostatic ca (the typical male cancer) where you can do psa levels/pr exams etc.

Its link with heavy smoking and (putatively) booze though can be highlighted more i suppose.

Ah, I wasn't sure if it was something that develops "naturally" or is kicked started by abuses.

You get what I'm saying anyway :p

    Jesus, poor guy.
He was one sexy dude, and his dance moves were sexy too.
I feel sad now having seen those pictures.

If it makes you sad, just picture him as the character he played in Donnie Darko.

I thought he was great in darko, again going for a challenging role that you would not expect him to play!

I'll always remember him as Bodhi in Point Break, did his own sky diving in that movie, some other great cult action movies like Red Dawn, Nixt of Kin and Roadhouse!

It would be nice if he somehow pulled through and was one of that small precentage who recovers. But not looking good

He worked that movie without painkillers, just the chemo.
Considering how many actors turn to recreational drugs I think he should be applauded for his professionalism.

Threads merged. A large portion of these posts came from AH so Celeb and showbiz rules did not apply. They do from now on in. Please keep that in mind,

I really hope he wins his battle - he will fight till the end

Those pictures are shocking. It just shows we never know what's in store for us and to make the most of our lives.

Hopefully they'll be a miracle cure for that particularly cruel cancer so sufferers like Patrick Swayze can be given a glimmer of hope.

Keep the battle going Patrick, you're in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh, I got a lump in my throat when I saw those photos. Sadly they're so typical of a cancer victim in the late stages. My poor Mum and Dad went to skin and bone, but retained a "potbelly", as can be seen in the photos of Patrick Swayze which is peritonitis. I just hope he's not in too much pain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,458 ✭✭✭CathyMoran

I found these photos deeply upsetting, the poor man and his family, my heart goes out to them all. Nobody knows what could happen next but pancreatic cancer is tough and late stage even tougher. I think that the best thing that anyone can do is hug their loved ones and let them know they care, you do not know what could happen next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Milly82

Very scary what this horrible illness can do to you, I wouldn't have recognised him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,458 ✭✭✭CathyMoran

The horrible thing is that it is happening to people all around the country, some of them will survive, some will not...my heart goes out to him and and his family, may they have the strenght to face whatever comes next.

Exactly! At an interview I was at with liam neeson a few weeks before his wife died, somebody asked him what philosophy he'd give on life, and he said:
    "Wow that's a tough one.Em,be honest.And l know it's a cliche,but live everyday to the full"

    ....:(:( how ironic!

Poor Patrick,I really hope he pulls through!!!!!xxx
