    From what I heard today in passing, nearly all of the jobs aren't in the ESB.

    They are building some new corporate HQ so there'll be some construction work, good to see our most expensive electricity in Europe is going to buy an nice new HQ....

    The ESB has been a closed shop for years and will remain that way... They advertise jobs in the newspaper with "apply through your supervisor" on them...

    Maybe i am not informed on the subject of electrical cars, but what car is there on the market that requires this infrastructure to be rolled out? Is there a mass produced electric only car. I cant find one. Hybrids yes or are we all going to be driving around in Golf carts!

    Is it just me or is this idea mad beyond belief, creating jobs is one thing but for projects that are a pure waste of money is another.

    Isn't part of it the installation of the smart meters and infrastructure
    in the west to support new windfarms?

    I can't see how there going to do this, if they didn't do this project in the boom years, how are they going to manage now with no money in the economy!!

    And who want's an electric car anyway, the Irish are well known for using their cars for commuting due to lack of public transport, the average drivers covers around 20,000 miles a year, with them kind of distances in mind, you would be plugging your electric car into the power point all the time!!

    It is pure nonsense and I can't see it working!!

    My thoughts exactly.

    the network infrastructure is old and needs to be updated to accommodate dispersed generation such as wind power.

    That's Eirgrid's job if I'm not mistaken, the transmission network serving large scale wind farms at any rate. Micro-generation would come under the distribution network alright, ESB are responsible for that.

    Eirgrid = Transmission system operator,
    ESB Networks = Transmission system owner/maintainer (plus the rest of the network downline only they are also the operator).

    Thought Eirgrid were also the transmission system owner as of March/soon ?

    I dont think those plans are going ahead. Esb use the value of the networks assists to get money for capital progrmas for the network. If the assists were transferred they wouldn't have that.

    back to these ESB jobs supposedly up for grabs over the next few years - does anyone know what type of engineers will be required? - civil, mechanical, electrical???

    when are these jobs likely to come on stream?

    cheers

    Maybe you are confusing it with Eirgrids purchase of SONI, the system operator of Northern Ireland (Link)?

    Sale of the transmission system from Networks to Eirgrid has been going through the rumour mill for a while but nothing has been announced.

    They require all types, the core ones would be electrical, mechanical and civil and then other specialist types such as C&I and structural to name just two.

    Places to keep an eye on for new ads:

    ESB job site:
    https://www.candidatemanager.net/esb/

    ESBI job site:
    http://www.esbi.ie/careers/vacancies.html

    Ad's for graduate entry's would be out around October-February to start the following September.

    I believe Eirgrid were to take possession of the Transmission network at one point leaving ESB responsible for the distribution network only, but perhaps it has been cancelled, there was a government white paper on it if I recall correctly.

    Last I heard from ESB was a rejection for electrical graduate positions, apparently over 250 applied for 10 places, so definitely some competition there!! I wouldn't expect this new announcement to cause any immediate grad vacancies, maybe there might be a few more next year, that's the best I can hope for anyway.

    I got the same one, but that was for ESBI not ESB! I have an interview for ESB next week :)

    EirGrids planned upgrade of the current transmission grid are detailed in the Grid25 programme here: http://www.eirgrid.com/EirgridPortal/uploads/Announcements/EirGrid%20GRID25.pdf

    I assume these upgrade measures would account for a substantial proportion of the jobs that the ESB expect to be generated over the coming years.

    ````````In answer to I
    There was a mass preduced electric car - by general motors - as a result of califonria legislation. Car turned out to be too popular so was "reclaimed" -
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F
    Its wiki so take as you like but after seeiing a documentary about the death of the electric car seems compelling to me.
    Just a bit more info on this, here is how the jobs are supposed to be split ot
    New Jobs Smart Networks
    750
    Smart Metering
    750
    Electric Vehicles
    600
    Wind Energy
    300
    Property Construction
    550
    New technologies (Eco Fund)
    350
    Energy service (Home Insulation)
    250
    Others (Telecoms, Biomass, Green Fleet)
    150
    Total
    3,700
    I know a few things through Chinese whispers and actual hard facts.
    The Energy Service Home Insulation Scheme (similar to SEI) has already kicked off the pilot programme and should start soon and is mainly contractors not directly ESB. Presume this ties into property construction somewhere as well.
    Their new HQ has not even been designed yet according to reports and will probably go out to an external consultant and contractor.
