The Government have been raising the price of cigarettes for year to a crazily high price and even banned the sale of 10 packs but under 18's still get there hands on them so this is a obsesses flawed idea.

Now they are planning on doing the same thing with drink under the pretence that if kids can't afford drink with there "pocket money" the problem will be solve just like the cigarettes problem......

Kids will be kids irrespective of these silly rules.

Yeah, it would make more sense for the Govt to charge smokers for all the health care associated with smoke related illnesses.

I'd like to see the smokers to go the black market for that.

Are we moving to litres instead of pints, or double pints?

Karl has already moved to litres (where available), as the good OP can attest to. :D

Would you count the tax they've paid on the cigarettes towards their health care?
Hows about charging people for drink-related diseases?
    Charge the obese for over-eating?

In fact, why not just charge everyone for health care?

    oops...

i'd like to see drunks charged for the continuous clogging up of A+E departments.. you should be breathalyzed on your way to wait, if you're over the limit, BAMN, €250 additional cost for appearing with a preventable injury - not to be covered by health insurance..

not to mention the various social and physical ills that alcohol causes over a lifetime of use..

furthermore, just what do you think that all the tax on cigarettes goes towards?? cigars for politicians?

    (best rhianna voice) puh-lease.........

What about a guy who injured himself after crashing his car while speeding? Preventable injury = €250
Or the guy who ate red meat everyday and got bowel cancer?
    Preventable injury = €250
Or the stupid twat who walked out in front of a bus without looking?
    Preventable injury = €250

    Nice idea won't work.

If you want to effect only the people who smoke cigarettes, tax cigarettes.
If you want to effect only the people who drink alcohol, tax alcohol.

I think this too, but only in cases where people are in A&E directly because they've overdone it... you know the blind-drunk tarts who sit ranting and wailing in a puddle of their own vomit... not so much an accident or emergency, but a carelessly self-inflicted state of shambles.
There again, you could be over what ever arbitrary limit, but maybe you got glassed by some random knackbag because he didn't like your shoes.
It'd be a hard call to make in some cases I'm sure... but if they installed voting devices on all the waiting room chairs (like the audience of who wants to be a millionaire), it'd give the people waiting something to do.

No surprise, the Government have been looking for anything that brings in money amd since Cigarettes and Drink are the biggest retail products out at the moment, it was only natural that they would get targeted to. The government are getting desperate and are running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

On a side note, if successful this could be good publicity for anti smoking/drinking campaigns as it will reduce the amount of buyers.

Why do people quibble about Irish alcoholism? Drinking is our "thing". Remove it, and what are you left with? Latter day, sober Collin Farrel, instead of Britney-shagging, hell-raising Collin Farrel. And who wants 4 million of them nerding about?
