Should Ireland introduce conscription?

I just wanted to get people's feelings on the idea of conscription in a similar way to Germany. It seems that that men can choose to opt out of military service but must perform some sort of civillian service.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Germany

I for one am in favour of such a move as I think it would instill a greater sense of discipline, honour and civic pride in our population.

With A7 in place we might be able to tell the junkies rapists and scumbags that they are naughty boys and should not do it again. Don't see much of a point in it when we cant find worthwhile jobs for the RDF to do. Why give these jobs to unwilling scumbags?

People who get jailed in ireland once they get released they then should be conscripted into the army for a year.

I know it seems like a good idea on paper, but conscription is never a good idea in practice. It is a form involuntary servitude that should be abolished.

So we'd have scumbags with military training and discipline?

    No, just no.

If the conscription were targeted at 17-19 year olds then in theory you might prevent some people from pursuing the "scumbag" route in life. You might even be able to cut back on some lower ranks in PDF/RDF if these positions were being occupied by conscripts.

    No, just no.

Firstly we are a Non-alligned country, therefore we don't need a huge standing Armed Forces.

Secondly, Where would we get the money for this?

Thirdly, Why would we train scumbags to kill eachother more efficiently?

no what should be set up to sort out unruly teenagers is a boot camp style course that would force discipline into them without teaching them skills that would be used in combat to kill an enemy!!!! so they cud,nt use this on the streets!! disband the rdf and put all resources into the pdf where it needed to buy more modern equipment and just keep the first line of reserve in place

Agree on your first point, they seem to have some decent results I believe, turn some of these people (male and female I might add) around. If that didn't work give them to the IDF..........yes this time I am talking about the Israeli Defence Force. knock the smug off em!

Luxembourg has conscription (even though they're a small country) it is used as qualification criteria before anyone can apply for a state job i.e. Police officer, bus driver, train driver, civil servant etc. I would be in the yes camp in this regard but it is a very expensive process and would require wholesale changes to the pay and conditions to DF members so therefore not feasible.

I'd vote yes. I have several family members who were conscripted and they had a great time playing with big boys toys. One even got a civvy career out of his training.

My uncle had some great stories about how he dodged conscription and they chased him round the place. :D

We should indeed. If people then do not want to do military service they can do aid work. I can't join the military, be an electrician, pilot, guard, etc because im color blind :(

Conscription is being phased out in a lot of European countries, it'd be very strange to start introducing it here now.
