The Irish Times reports that real-time arrival information at bus stops and a traffic management system that will allow buses to have priority at more than 600 junctions across Dublin will be in place from next year, according to Dublin City Council. The real-time system uses satellite technology to identify the position of approaching buses and update the arrival time on an electronic display unit. The bus priority system is funded by the Dublin Transportation Office and is due to be introduced early next year and fully implemented by the end of 2010. The real-time passenger information panels are due to be introduced in the middle of next year, but their rollout is subject to funding in next year's Budget.

Sounds good, I hope it happens this time. It would make the bus service a lot more user friendly.

take note of this little phrase at the end of the OP's quote from the paper
but their rollout is subject to funding in next year's Budget.

those few words can make all the difference

There was a pre roll out trial of real time bus info in the lucan area nearly 10 years ago. Didnt get past the trial stage and the few displays that were put up are gone now as far as I know. I doubt that given the state of the current finances that this latest project will get much further.

I'd love to see RTIS displays installed at some bus stops but it's also worth pointing out that even if it doesn't happen, there are huge benefits to the bus service anyway. Just knowing where bus areas are would normally be a prerequisite to running a bus service in most countries.

Integration with SCATS *could* also make a huge difference to delays at junctions but I'm not holding my breath - Luas already is and it's not exactly speedy through the city centre. At the end of the day, knowing a bus is stuck at a junction is useless if someone has made the political decision to give private cars priority over public transport.
