I am planning on switching courses next year. IT is the course I want to move into (it will probably be 3rd year). Anyways I have got plenty of info on the course except for the final year project. It would be great if some of ye could tell me what ye did, what you can do, how was it etc. I want to know everything!

P.S. I know the FYP is done in 4th I just don’t want to move to IT if I think the project is going to be too much for me

Going into third year, touch wood. Might be seeing you so! :pac:

There are a few final years about here so they can fill you in a lot better than I can.

I get the impression it's manageable. Final years have their own lab, away from the plebs.

If you can get someone to supervise you with a project you'd both be interested in, it should make for smooth(er) sailing. This seems to be the issue though -- it could be hard to get someone to supervise you if you really want to complete a project about a topic you may like but no one else does. So it may be more a case of selecting projects from the table.

Like I say, the final years can explain this in more detail.

Final year student here. Ya, FYP was manageable. It might look horrible when you get it but it is doable. You won't be given something that you won't be able to do.

What projects are people doing this year and what have other 4th years done previous years?

I'm a final year ECE but opted to do my FYP with the IT department cause they are way more laid back about the whole thing!

I chose my project and it was to control a robot over the wireless using a nintendo DS. But it wouldn't be a typical IT project as it involved work with hardware and some soldering so obviously the ITs wouldn't have been able to do it :pac::D

My advice is pick your own FYP, If your interested in the FYP it will stand to you and make it alot easier. Also my fyp was alot was easier to talk about to the general pleb than alot of the other projects because it sounds somewhat interesting. And trust me you will asked about the bloody thing enough!

I was on the NUI web page and I seen a visual sample of a project of a Formula 1 car. Does anyone know what exactly this project was?

    Do you have a link?

Its not a electronic engineering department project anyway, pretty sure its not a IT one either

Thats a modeling language called VRML, we did some of that it Graphic and imagine processing in first semester this year. I never didn't anything as complex as that (i just built a chair :P). But their would have been people in the class that did something along the lines of that in my class. We had to do a project over Christmas in that subject and one of the options was building a room in VRML, i picked building a simple game with openGL (You can try it if you want, download it form here, you'll also need this glut32.dll, put it in the same folder as the "Sam_Project.exe")

Sam still teaches VRML huh? I used it in my FYP (BA.IT). never again! to be avoided like the plague in terms of it's uselessness...

... exactly why i did the openGL game! I thought i might just have to use C/C++ again at some stage :pac:

Shameless bump! Might I suggest the SU boards: http://boards.sin.ie. One or two past IT students there who might give you even more info :)

Ya he still teaches some vrml alright. But we'll be adding some more interesting stuff to the IT degree over the next couple of years, starting in september. mainly digital media courses for games and motion pictures and a load of equipment that myself and sam are getting for the new Digital Media Lab on the ground floor...it'll be around by september aswell.

    @danh789

You'll be able to use the stuff for your final year projects. We'll be getting an optical motion capture system, ipod touches, xbox360s higher spec'ed pcs to run 3dsmax, aftereffects, premier, photoshop and the Torque game engine (advanced) to develop on the ipods, xboxes and pcs. We're bringin in a lot of game dev and video editing etc. Stick around and you'll have alot more interesting options for your FYP's ;)
