Golf "Ryder Cup Style" Draft

We had quite a successful run at something like this on the soccer forum, and I think it’d be a good laugh for the golf one too. A nice change from the usual “what club to buy, what course to join” topics.

    How it works:

Similar to an NFL/NBA draft you might have heard of or know something about. Each player picks golfers in order, and within the pre-determined criteria, until each person has a full roster of golfers.
Similar to the soccer draft, there would be a dedicated thread for picking your players and explaining your picks, and then another thread where everyone can discuss/berate individual picks.
At the end each player selects a team captain, and the teams are randomly drawn against each other in a knockout format, with the draft participants voting until we have a winner.

    Rules:

    - We have to choose a cut-off point in history otherwise we’ll have players suggesting obscure pro’s from the 1940s who nobody’s heard of. I suggest the 1st January 1990 as a good starting date. Most people of an adult age will have decent memories of most of the years since then and it will make it easier to judge the teams if everyone knows most or all of the players. If anyone disagrees with this date it can be discussed.
    - Only a player’s golf after this cut off date is taken into account: eg – if you pick Jack Nicklaus, his major wins in the 70s/80s are 100% not taken into consideration. So the players should be assessed on how good they were at professional golf from 1 Jan 1990 onwards. Obviously there is a lot of subjectivity in this, but arguing your case is part of the fun of these drafts.
    - To qualify they must have played professionally on one of the main men’s tours (US, Europe, South Africa, Asia, Japanese . . .) This doesn’t need to be a rule really, because you could pick someone who played on an obscure mini tour, but nobody is gonna know who he is, and your team will lose out. Champions/Seniors tour golf is not taken into consideration.
    - The player who picks first in the first round will pick last in the second round and third rounds, first in the fourth and fifth rounds, last in the sixth and seventh rounds and so on . . . There will be a spreadsheet available which will detail the order (it will be done by random draw.
    - You have 24 hours to make a pick from the time the last pick was made. If you go over this 24 hour limit the next person can pick and you can make up you pick at a later date. The person does not have to inform you that you are being skipped, but he may do so if he wishes. The onus is on you to make sure you pick on time.
    - After you pick you should PM the next in line.
    - You can’t mention any golfers not yet picked in the discussion thread.

    The teams:

    - Each team has 8 players
    - Each team must have a minimum of 2 players from Europe
    - Each team must have a mimimum of 2 players from the US
    - Each team must have a minimum of 2 players from the rest of the world
    - The head to head matchups at the end of the draft will be in a Ryder Cup/President’s cup style format, so you need to pick players you think will work well in foursomes, fourballs and singles.
    - You must select a team captain and a team name at the end

    The head to heads:

    - There will be a random draw to decide the matchups.
    - There will be a separate thread, with a poll, for each matchup.
    - The two players will PM me, or a moderator if I’m involved in the match, with their playing order for that game: 2 foursomes matches, 2 fourball matches and 8 singles.
    - Each golfer must play one singles match, and either a foursomes or a fourball match, but not both.
    - Participants vote to decide who wins.

Ideally I would like 12-16 participants, including myself. Any more than that and it will become harder to choose decent golfers, and people could lose interest. So no more than 16.
Word of warning: on the soccer draft some people rushed to sign up, but quickly lost interest. Only sign up if you browse the golf forum regularly and will be available to make picks within the 24 hour timeframe, otherwise it can get tedious for everyone else.

So if you’re interested, or have any questions – let it be known! Or if anyone disagrees with the format it’s open for discussion

    Seems very complicated.

I would like to know more about how matches are actually played or judged?? Am I reading it right that everyone votes on every single game and that's how results are got. That would be a lot of polls.

that or just one big poll to decide the winner. That's just the end game though, the real meat of it is in the selection process and the discussion

I'd have a go at this but like Woodgate I'm not 100% on how it all works.

it's simple enough if someone explains it correctly!

say there are ten people involved in the draft. Their object is to pick the best players they can in order, until their team is filled.

    So it might go:

    Team 1 - Tiger Woods
    Team 2 - ?????
    Team 3 - ???
    Team 4 - ???
    Team 5 - ???
    Team 6 - ???
    Team 7 - ???
    Team 8 - ???
    Team 9 - ???
    Team 10 - ???

    then it reverses, and teams 10, 9, 8 . . .

And so on until each team has a full roster.

this thread is the soccer draft just so you have an example.

I understand a bit better now. Hadn't heard of anything like that before.

Oh right that explains it more clearly.

Yeah I'd give it a go.
