Mobile speed traps

There was a speed trap on the dual carriageway on the way into work this morning, and everyone is convinced that they've been caught.

Do the mobile speed cameras need to stop the car to issue penalty points? or have they bought new cameras that can get you just by your numberplate?

Expect the postie to be dropping a present through your letterbox. The system is automated so just the numberplate is required.

Were you above the speed limit?

I might have been, I was keeping up with heavy traffic at around 100kph but I wasn't staring at the speedo (thought watchin the road would be safer)

I'm assuming that you mean a Gatso Van.
Did it flash when you went past?

    Does it have to flash?

No, just one of the gardai with a tripod under a bridge.

I was under the impression they had to actually pull you over to issue the fine and points but thought they might have new gadgets that can do it automatically.

In the majority of cases they do have to pull you over some divisions have recording equipment that takes photos!

I'm afraid some of them do take photos so when you see the Garda walking around on his mobile and you think...nice one got away with that... then 3 weeks later your reminded about it with a nice letter and fine and points! :(

My one was on the tripod indeed!

cool, they did have a van pulled over beside them so I can fool myself into presuming I'm safe enough?

Wasn't speeding myself, at most would have been doing 110kph that's just the normal flow of traffic on the slow lane on this section of dual carriageway,
not nice to be worrying about a expensive fine through the door

usally if they have it set up on a tripod it is conected to a camera. I know of a few people caught coming of the N2 into Finglas just under the bridge.

How long does it take for the fine to be issued and posted?

I was on the motorway home, definately speeding. The bean garda had a camera out the car window. She looked at me as I passed but that was it. Never seen a speed trap on a motorway before.

A garda friend of mine has said they have to come after you, but you never know. I am sure some new equipment has come out to battle this.

    .

    :p:p:p:p:p:p:p

You never seen a speed trap on a motorway before!

Obviously you do not do much driving...After I picked myself up from the floor having had a fit of ironic giggles, I just had to ask, do you not realise that the Gardai in 99% of cases only have speed traps in safe driving areas where they can raise the maximum amount of revenue, score the most points for the "minister" and do feck all about improving road safety?

Despite what the apologists for the Gardai say,on the ministerial use of extremely dodgy statistics, the Gardai's application of speed traps is disgraceful. The best you get are leather clad moustachioed "motor cycle" types usually hiding behind bushes whilst holding their tools ready to pounce on motorists whilst failing to improve road safety for anyone.

An accountable traffic corps, directed by the public to enforce safe driving with the appropriate use of speed traps as directed by the public e.g. outside of schools and dangerous side roads etc is what is required.

It is an on going disgrace these time wasters abusing the public on safe motor ways.

Bad news, a tripod means it had a camera mounted on it I'm afraid (like the one that was in the RSA TV ads a few months ago). No pulling over required.

Yep, if it's a garda hanging out the window, it's a handheld speed gun and you have to get pulled. You mustn't have been going fast enough, go faster next time!:D

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.
