Im thinking of buying a 02 passat, nct for 1 year and a half.. 109,000 miles. for 3500 euro... its off a dealer and comes with free checks in all departments. Is this a good deal? The only thing putting me off is the milage..!

Have you a link to the advert? VW petrol engines do not have a good reputation so that mileage would worry me too. Was it regularly serviced? Timing belt should have been done around 60k, make sure it was done, and is due again so get that into the deal if you do buy it.

poxy carzone links never work for me! ugh!
Either way op, i'd be sceptical at best about buying such high mileage. you could probably do a bit better. I reckon hold out a few more weeks as i'm sure more cars will be on the market by then.

How much is the optional warranty? Id be looking at the 12 month anyway. I never heard of selling a warranty separately... Seems a bit strange to be honest.

Id hold out for a while anyway, unless you desperately need 4 wheels under you. Believe me, that car will still be there in a few weeks time!

I wouldnt worry about the mileage on that primera because they go for ever. Bulletproof engines. The Taxi part is wort avoiding though because you might have difficulty in shifting it again.

Those Alfa's are very nice but have a bit of a reputation and do come up quite a bit on the motors forum. Have a scroll through this thread and you'll see:

Looks tidy enough from the photos. Ask about the timing belt though, VW timing belt should be changed every 60k miles afaik so it should be due a change again at 120k miles if it was originally changed on schedule. A haggling point on the asking price.

I've heard plenty of stories of the that model Primera going through its fair share of clutches and gearboxes - reliability took a niticable dip when Renault got involved. That Passat is a nice spec and that engine is well known to be one of the more reliable VW petrols. Its an old school 8 valve - nothing too fancy there. However, a diesel would be a better bet, something like this:

This would be a better bet and with a bit of bargaining could be gotten for similar money I reckon. Also, a high mileage diesel will be easier to offload in a few years thatn a high mileage petrol
