i personally perfer the passats because of their size, passats and golfs have more or less the same enginge range and insurance is nearly the same, depends on your age also, both can be fairly reliable, some dumb little issues with he passat boot lock fails easily

It's nice to see you setting your sights high for a first car. God be with the days when we had to go no higher than a 1.0 lt for a first car and drive it for years to get the insurance down.

Anyway, in terms of reliability you'll not got too far wrong with either. The Golf would maybe suit a younger person more than the Passat - it's an old man's car (I know, I drive one!- and yes the boot lock does give trouble)

    Go for the Golf!

both the passat and golf are excellent cars and can be picked up at good money. i have an 05 passat 130bhp old model. Only concern is insurance, am 21 myself 2yr ncb in my own name and 2yrs on my mothers insurance and have 2 penalty points cheapest quote i could get was round €2k so look into your insurance before you buy either

If your 18, forget about the 130bhp engines. Most insurance companies wont even quote you. I've a golf TDi and my insurance is €2k with 1 years ncb and 6 months named driver, full license. I'm also 18. I will admit though that I would love to upsize to a passat, there is just something appealing about it.

    EDIT; I'm insured with quinn

Ya its grand, plenty of power, handy for overtaking, and reliable. Lovely car to drive, holds the road real well, solid car and looks well. Really light on diesel. The last time i measured, I got 560 miles on a €44 tank! I've a 00 mkIV which Ive had for a year. the tax is the real killer though! €580 is annoyin when the newer diesels are only €150!

If you can get over the tax, look into the insurance before you buy one. They are a nice car and worth buying if you can afford the tax, insurance etc.

Forget about red badges or letters they can be bought cheap on eBay. The true power output measured in kilowatts, should be on the Vehicle Registration Cert or located somewhere on the inside of the boot.

    130bhp is 96kw
    110bhp is 82kw
    105bhp is 78kw
    90bhp is 67kw

My advice would be to go for the Golf to be honest. If you have a family then the Passat is a great car but otherwise it's just bigger and heavier than the Golf thus lowering the fuel economy. If you can't get the 130 bhp Passat then just avoid it.

I know, all the 105 bhp 1.9 TDI Passat owners will come along and probably disagree with that but that's how I see it. A Golf would be better.
