Loughrea Golf Course - Any use?

Down that neck of the woods at the weekend and looking to get a game in somewhere with reasonable green fees. Loughrea is only €30 for a Saturday green fee, so it ticks the economy box at least but it was selected randomly due to it's location... but there are no pics on the website which is a bit off putting... Has anyone played it, or can anyone recommend a better option in the region? (Loughrea/Galway City)?

hi jab, i used to be a member of loughrea and its fairly challenging but if you have time check out Portumna, Athenry or cregmore. All are on the east of Galway but Portumna is a cracker (17 is totally class par 5). All around 30 euro but be sure to call first. If you can get into Galway play Galway but be warned its not cheap around 70 but in great nick at the moment. (shame i cant say same about some of the members;))

Athenry is €50 on weekends I think. Portumna is a good shout but Loughrea is an okay course. Its in decent nick and some nice holes. Its not brilliant but its decent.

used to be a member there myself (loughrea). course used to wreck my head. greens dont hold many shots, and the new greens are woeful, hit a 9 iron onto them and they (used to anyways) bounce over the back. 10th hole is just silly. play uphill to a green that tilts away from you more or less, hit many a good lofted club in there only for it to run off the back, shot is to play into the grass/rough side of the hill and hope for a lucky bounce onto the green.

these impressions are based from over 1.5 yrs ago, maybe its gotten better.

athenry is pretty bland, up down up down, fairways basically touch each other. am-am on there this weekend too so might be tough to get out.

played portumna last week. lovely course, fairly long too, easily the best out of loughrea/athenry/portumna. only bout 30 mins or less from loughrea too, would be my pick from that neck of the woods
