Opel Astra Service Problem

Wife has a 05 1.4 petrol astra which is been a great car very low mileage and had never given us a moments bother until very recently. Car was in 6 weeks ago for full service with main Opel dealer did all the usual nothing major needed doing. Then last week car starts to loose power and engine warning light started coimng on intermitently. She brought it up to another opel dealership close to work to have a look at it. They said it was power coil problem and need to be replaced car. When the part was replaced they couldnt get the car going and after looking further they said there was a crack in the cam shaft which needed doing costing €1,800 for the lot. Wife was asked was there oil ever put in the car as there wasnt a drop in it and this could have caused the problem.

I couldn't believe this as the car was always topped up with oil and it was serviced only 6 weeks previously when the oil and filter was done. Do we have any come back with the original opel garage who sericed the car if there was no oil in it causing a crack in the cam shaft.

Have to say i never checked oil after original service as there no warning lights coming on straight afterwards. Would be more straight forward if it was the same opel dealership who were looking after it but any advice appreciate.

I had this exact same problem a year ago. Although somewhat mechanically minded, I was suprised at the fix considering the symptoms. It turned out to be the sensor to the airflow, which controls the mix fed to the engine. It's a common Opel problem. You'll find it in he middle of the air duct to the air filter - a unit with a connection and cable running off of it.

Of course you may need to get it into service to verify the fail, but if you can somehow get your hands on one yourself, you may save yourself some cash.

Have heard these are starting to happen a few astra new models, seems to be a fault with some of these cars,i would'nt think you could'nt point the finger to anyone,i would think the other opel garage was tryin to pass blame to owner tryin to say no oil in car so not cause big warranty arguements

Problems with Engine lights and Astras seem to be a common problem, We had the previous model astra 1.7 diesel and had a similar problem (related to the ECU I think) and Opel couldn't fix it. They reckoned it would need a new engine at 60k.
