Multiple cars on one insurance policy. Is it possible?
Only the policy holder would be named so both cars could never be driven at the same time. What you think?

But what if, while you are out driving one of your cars, the other on is stolen from outside your house?

AFAIK multi car policies are available in the UK - these policies are like trade insurance but for private individuals. I did some enquiring to see if anything like this is available here and got nowhere. I think it was discussed at length before in this forum or on octane.ie.

If you have just one extra car you could get a 2nd policy and ask the insurance company to apply a discount equivalent to your existing NCB to the 2nd policy. Your NCB is tied to your existing policy but you may find them willing to negotiate if they think you'll take out a 2nd policy with them.

Ya I always wondered how people who have lets say 3 - 4 cars insure them ...

Do they have to take out a new policy on each vehicle with Zero NCB ... ?

OR could they just take out garage insurance or something .. ? Can an individual have garage insurance ?

Yes, but you need to be on the inside track with a broker to sort this for a private indiv.:p

A search of boards brought me to this old post but it still doesn't answer my question.

I recently bought a new car but still have 6 months of NCT and Tax on my old car which is registered in my wife's name. My insurance policy (which does not include my wife) allows me to drive any car that is not registered in my name.

If I carry my current insurance policy while I drive the old car around with only the NCT and Tax disks on display... am I breaking the law????????

I know I wouldn't be displaying an insurance disk, but if I was stopped at a checkpoint, I would have a valid license and insurance certificate to show the guard.

Only one car would be driven at any given time.

Any feedback on this query would be greatly appreciated.

i think it is an offence not to display a valid insurance disk so you could be done for this (not 100% on this) Also i would ring the insurance company to check you are actually covered as they may argue you have an interest in the car if its your wifes

Even without seeing your insurance policy I can say with almost certainty that the other car must also be insured.

You are insured on your policy to drive your car. You are insured to drive other cars 3rd party so long as that car already has an insurance policy on it. Thats how it works with most if not all insurance companies for private individuals.

    Not true with Quinn-Direct.
I have a third party extension with them and can drive an uninsured car once it has tax and test. I confirmed this with both a call and email.

same with AXA except for a car in wife's name, I had to be named on her policy and she on mine to drive each other's cars.

Thanks for the info lads. Very helpful insights from all of you and everybody's views made sense. I guess it depends on your insurer. I've been with Quinn and Axa before but am not currently, so will have to check up on their deal with wives!!

... maybe if I send off the logbook to shannon and change it into her cat's name, I'll be able to take her for a spin every now and again without having a conflict of interest!!!!

You'd still have an interest in the car, as your wife owns the cat and you have an interest in the cat. Need to reg it to someone you're not interested in:p
