Rip/Import HDCD??

Hey, I've searched the internet for the last few days trying to find a way to import an HDCD onto my computer. I can't seem to find a way. Maybe somebody here could shed some light.

Basically what I have is an album on CD that also happens to be an HDCD. So as far as I know normal players will play the CD at 16bit, and players that are HDCD compatible will play the disk at it's full res of 20bit.

What I'm trying to achieve is to get all the tracks off the CD onto my desktop at their full res as 20bit audio files. This has to be possible but I can't figure it out. I know media player can play HDCDs but it only rips the HDCD as if it's a normal CD, ie: 16bit 44.1kHz.

I know HDCD is a dead format but I want to do a comparison between HDCD and CD as part of a project. I'm not limited by hardware, soundcards or operating systems etc....

    Any advice?

HDCD was designed to be fully compatible with 16 bit CD systems, so WMP is not doing anything special giving you a 16 bit rip.

There is no way to rip it, you need the Pacific Microsonics proprietary"codec", or a HDCD player with S/Pdif out. We have one at work, but I've never tested a HDCD in it to see if you get 20 bits over S/Pdif...

I thought microsoft bought that codec and implemented it into media player from version 9.

    So they did!

Quad Leo, I found this with Google (in about 1 minute...) you need to enable 24 bit apparently:

Go into Options in the WMP. Go to the Devices tab. Highlight Speakers & click Properties. Check the box for 24 bit audio. Click on Apply and/or OK. You now will have HDCD.
