Main reason for query was that a Friend called midlands earlier and was told it was fox shoot open to all CFire??i had been told while ago that it was Deer calibre only..so will the lads operating the targets be popping Deer or fox cutouts up????!!

I don't know its advertised as being for any centerfire hunting rifle, all shooting from the prone position 100,200 and 300 yards in this months Irish Shooting Digest, not the fox target stuff Rovi has posted? I am trying to get a friend of mine to enter (I havnt got a suitable gun yet!!) I just want an excuse to go to see the place!!! Anybody who knows anybody Iin midlands want to actually confirm exactly what the competition is going to be??

Shooting at 40-60 yds isnt my thing mate...If it was the 100-300 prone,Id be there, but im not paying 30 sqiud for that kind of shooting...

Id rather go for a bunny shoot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 809 ✭✭✭ejg

Deer stalking normally covers from free hand short range (40-60m) to off the sticks around 100m to prone 200m - 300m.

That could make for a nice competition. A bit of everything, so that the heavy rifles would have a bit of a handicap at the short ranges and the lighter at the longer ranges.

Your on mate. Cashel or Glanbia, your choice - weather looks to be good on Sunday.

I can't afford the $$$$$$$ this week. nor until I have the Sako 308, the other Bushnell 6-24x50, ASE NightStar mod, scope mounts, and the CZ 452 varmint stock paid for.

I didn't think I owed that much until I see it all laid out now.:eek::eek:

So, no aids like sticks at the 40m and 60m. Can be fun too. I've overcome the dissapointment and might just use a light 243 without mod instead of a 308.
Heard some lads are dusting off the stutzens already.

Forgot to find out, is the 100m prone off bipod or rucksack or off elbows? any one know?

what about leaning against a tree? A bit sturdier than a stick - do people do that here?

A great day out. The weather was perfect which is a major bonus when laying on the ground in a bog in Offaly. There was a good crowd and some great shooting (not by me). I didn't get the no sling bit, probably due to the recession:D

Cheers any chance of a run down on the course/type of fire, number of rounds, distances, winners etc?

Five rounds at 40 meters standing, five rounds at 60 meters kneeling, seven rounds 100 meters prone, all without support and three at 100 meters at a smaller fox target with 5 second exposure. Forget the names of the winners:(. The weather seemed to even out the differences between calibers with .22lr doing ok.

Great day, great weather, great prizes . Never shot at a paper fox before. Very tricky this free shooting business.
This was possibly the best 5 shot group of the day at 40m standing, no sticks no sling. Shot by Johnathan.

Very friendly lot at the range. We even had a chance at 300m targets with our hunting rifles and hunting ammo after the competition. Enjoyed that, we from the south don't have any ranges close by so we made good use of the opportunity.

Well edi how did you get on?Sako or Rem?why no sling allowed?
How was 300m?how did the Stutzen perform?
    Regards KKK;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 809 ✭✭✭ejg

    KKK,
My friend with the 308 stutzen shot about the same as myself, not too great. I had taken the 308 sako with mody along, maybe not the best for off-hand shooting. The three- four top fellas were in a different league. (one with mody on his 270)
The 300m made up for it a bit, my drop chart seemed to be spot. First cold barrel shot was almost in the middle. After a few shots the moderator gave off a bit of a heat haze.

Didn't notice too unusual rifles, for a change it didn't seem to matter what rifle was used. A fella with a 300 win mag was shooting very well, as were some with 22's.
