Does a tooth ache + hole in tooth mean infection?

I've had a hole in one of my teeth for months now. It's not one of the biggest teeth (there's 3 behind it). Anyway, last night it got pretty painful but I got to sleep without pain killers. I should have checked before I went but I thought I could go to the dental hospital and get a filling. They can only do temporary ones so I rang around a few dentists. One place fit me in for this afternoon.

I went and described the pain. Said it was a 6/10 at it's worst and the pain was more sensitivity than anything. The dentist said from my description it sounds like an infection has got in which means extraction or root canal and I got an xray to confirm this. I just asked how much root canal would cost. It was €550 over 3 sessions. That was that I was getting root canal without actually telling the dentist I wanted it. :)

I also need 4 small fillings but they'll have to wait for a couple of months.

I just have doubts in my head that I needed root canal because from my description the girl in the dental hospital thought a filling was what I needed. So does aching coming from a hole in the tooth basically mean root canal or extraction?

    Cheers.

/ on a side note - what a difference from my last root canal about 10 years ago. No needles in the gums and not the slightest bit of pain.

how long the the pain last?
    what brings it on?
    does it throb?
    at night?
    worse when you lie down?

if you answer these questions, i can give you an idea.

She asked if it was throbbing or sharp pain and I said more sharp. The pain you get with sensitive teeth.

The pain started yesterday in work (it was always very sensitive previously). It got worse as the day went on but I had decided when I was in bed that I was going to the dentist once and for all.

Lying on the side of the pain last night actually relieved it which meant I fell asleep without pain killers. The pain was gone this morning but I had to get it sorted today and make use of the day off work.

Obviously I can't change anything now. The root canal process has started but I just thought it was strange that a filling wasn't even considered before xray.
