    audi a4 1.9tdi 115, or A3,A4 1.8 Turbo
if i had 3500 to mess around with id probably buy clean standard toyota celica, nice and sporty look with decent engines and good reliability (130 brake in stndrd model up to 240 in turboed gt4) or honda prelude 2.0, 2.2vtec, they are nice cars that won't let u down with good performance
i not too sure about getting a saab, they are lovely cars but arent very common and servicing could come out expensive,

Just a thought but a 22 y.o. spending c. 20% of the value of the vehicle on road tax and the same or more most likely on insurance sounds like trouble looming to me.

Insurance will be pretty much the same whether it's a 1.2 or a 2.0TDI. If he bought a €2k car then the insurance and tax would probably be the same again - or do you mean he should save up more cash for a while?

I was in a similar positon a while ago and got a 04 Fabia VRS and remapped it to 170bhp or so and all for under 6k.

If I wanted outright performance for my money, I would have gone Peugeot 206 gti

thanks for the replies guys, wouldnt be gone on the peugeot, a tad small! cant really get the a4 115/130 for the kind of money I'm talking. Very hard to find an A3 1.8t which is what I'd really go for as well.

Not really - my generation (98-~03) aren't dirt cheap, but still quite affordable.
The newer generation shares bucketloads of parts with Opel/Vauxhall as I recall so also quite reasonable.
(3500? Saab? See sig? sorry shameless self plug, probably not what you're after)

haha, your right, that was shameless! nice car though. there's no turbo in it is there? my insurance would go up a big bit so out of my league!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,389 ✭✭✭cianclarke

Nope, no turbo - not bad, but it's hardly a rocket.
I'm 20 and my insurance is 1500 a year, just as a guide..
Don't rule out the 2.0 (or the 1.9tdi's) - it's not *that* bad on insurance!
