I spoke to someone today who's pretty high up in the irish motor industry - he told me that dealerships will accept 3/4 of the marked price on used cars to shift them from the forecourt... seems like a lot to me ...

how much would you expect to a salesperson to knock off the price? I've seen a car thats 13500....

Depends on the particular vehicle. For example if the same car was advertised at €15,500 in January I'd not expect much off €13,500 now.

Forget about the marked price and focus on the actual value of the car. If your €13500 car is really worth €9000 then 25% off is pretty poor - if it's really worth €12000 then 12% off is good.

ok its a 07 golf trendline, low milage, perfect condition...

That sets alarm bells ringing to begin with - there was no Trendline spec in Ireland in 2007. Base, Comfortline, Sportline or GT Sport.

sorry... for some reason thought it was trendline - spec doesnt say...

Hard to tell what spec it is, probably Base as www.cartell.ie isn't giving a spec.

I like those wheels, but put them with the DUB badge on the back and I'm guessing boy racer. Not to tar them all with the same brush, the previous owner may have loving cared for their pride and joy. Only used it on dry weekends at low speeds to impress the opposite sex

    or

It may have been revved to the red line at every oppportunity (only way to get the 1.4 to move), with the clutch being dumped at every green traffic light.

The Trade guide values a Golf 1.4 Base 5dr, 2007 with 38,000km at €13,900 so the advertised price is a bit on the heavy side. I'd say start at €9,500 and work from there - about €10,500 should get you the car.

Im failing to see your logic here to be honest.
Trade book = 13900, Advertised price €13750. ROR: €10,500 should get you the car !

Trade book = not even useful for wiping your @rse with, paper is too shiny :p

Values in that were probably correct ish up to July last year, but prices are changing so quickly now there is no way a publication can keep up.

why mention book price then ? Why even have one on your desk ?
€10500 is v low for a 2007 VW Golf, Base or not.
If dealer wanted 10500 why advertise @ 13750.

OP, Car looks well with alloys, even if base model.
If its for you buy it, but bargain hard. 9500 is too low too start

i wouldnt give anymore than 10500 as you can get a 09 golf for 18950, they advertise higher because of trade-ins. if its a stright cash sale then id hold out at 10k

you must have an 07 golf do you :D

9500 is ok to start with, and if you meet somewhere in the middle your doing well.

a base 1.4 golf is not worth more than 10k-10.5k imo

turn up and tell them your out to buy a golf today, the cash is in your account and ready to buy. print off some similar golfs for sale near the garage and bring them with you and tell the guy that your going to view these 3 cars and your buying whatever the best deal you can get today.

tell him you have 1000e in your pocket and will be leaving it as a deposit now and back with the rest 2 days later or whatever suits your self and you will pay the rest. no trade ins, just cold hard cash!

then i would offer him 9k there and then.

    This is what you want.

You would get insurance no problem, its a diesel so wont be much more and would be alot more fun/safer to drive than the weedy little petrol.1.4 is good in some cars, like say Mg Zr, older Honda Civics etc, but in the Golf its very underpowered, even dangerously for overtaking and stuff.A 92 1.0 micra has a better power to weight ratio :P

would deffo recommend this car over the 75bhp 1.4 version.

BIG EDIT - ITS A COMMERCIAL CAR, ONLY 2 SEATS! (may not be to your taste)

dont mind the 2 litre bit, insurance will be grand, the only difference will be the 1.4 and 2.0 motor tax at circa 400e Vs 614e per year.

could pick up that GT for 11k max imo

It doesnt have to be a van, loads of 3dr and 5dr Golf 2.0 tdi's for around that price. They might not be advertised at that, but thats what they are going to sell at.

In fact i dont drive a golf at all.
Cheapest Golf on Carzone up to 1.6 2007 is 11k private sale. i just don't think OP will get that car for 10.5k.
There is a well known dealer that sells cars at low prices, usually about lowest on net significantly higher than 10.5k mentioned. i wud bet that even they could not sell their car @ 10.5k.
    Only my opinion after all.
i just know from negotiating for cars this year that rarely are those big discounts out there. but ready to be proved wrong
    good luck anyway dollybird09

€9,500 for a 4 year old 1.4 litre Golf is just daft. Let him keep it. Did you go into the dealership in person or just enquire by phone?

    just over phone...

so how much should i be paying for a 4yr old golf? like i know nothing about cars..

a lot of the golfs are priced around 12k ..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 167 ✭✭Kartale

    Unfort everyone opinion will differ.
IMO that colour would be a bad seller, but if it for you and you visit the garage and bargain and happy with price buy it.
Of course there are newer cars that are cheaper but again your choice is a golf.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Seriously, don't go for a 1.4 80bhp Golf at all. There are miles better engines available. Insurance wont be much of a problem. I think 10.5k is a bit low for an 07. Avoid a baseline and go for a Comfortline or a Sportline (renamed GT Sport post-2007). These will be much easier to sell and have nice little extras

You will not get a dealer's best price over the phone, you will have to be sitting in front of them with their full attention. They get dozens of enquiries by phone every day and rarely take them seriously.

    Here are two cheaper ones:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1369705
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1372862

You should be aiming to haggle upto around 8% discount off the asking price for a straight deal ideally.

Really if possible bring someone who has experience of buying cars or haggling with you to do the deal, like any business that involves haggling its a game of witts. It's a matter of knowing the max you are willing to spend against the minimum the seller is willing to let it go at, it's not an exact science however. If you are a weak or novice negotiator then any seller will look to take advantage, it is their job to get as much for the car as possible at the end of the day.
