Buying a Mondeo up North

    Hi Folks,

I'm looking at buying a Mondeo up north - a 2005 or 2006 Diesel- I see some online from around GB£5,000 - £6,000 (plus €2k or so for VRT) and they look like great deals to me.

There's one or two in particular catching my eye like a Zetec 2.0 TDCI, but there are so many variations, I don't know what to go for - I don't need a "bullet" of a car or anything, just something solid.

I'd be buying off a garage up there, so I presume I have the same cover in terms of bringing it back if there was some sort of quality issue (If I get a guarantee period)

I'd appreciate any thoughts people might have (either on the merits of buying up north or ont he Mondeos, as I am very green when it come to things like this.

    Thanks,

Just before you travel have a look at these...

    http://cars.motornet.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1375703

They are all Retail prices so Im sure if you go in and say you have no trade in plus you dont want warranty ( which is what you are doing if you go up North ) you'll get anything between €1,000 and €2,000 off all thoses prices. :)

First Question - Have you checked prices down here? Here's a few 06's for the same money your talking about -

Here's one that should come into your range -

As your looking at a 3-4 year old car, it will be out of manufacturers warranty. I would be wary of a dealers warranty, because if something does go wrong chances are you will have to get it back to that dealer, which means possible towing charges back to the North.

By all means, buy up North, but dont be silly and fall into the "everything up North is cheaper" mentality, because, in some cases, and in this case it isnt.

    Thanks for the replies guys,

Some of the ones you came back with have certainly caught the eye and are definetly worth investigating.

Maybe I was going up north thinking that I'd "automatically" get a better deal - but am I correct in thinking that an English/Northern car would have a better spec than an Irish one?

I presume that Irish garages like eyeryone else are looking to do a deal, but what do you think is a fair discount off sticker price for a cash deal? Do you really think €2,000 is a runner - that's up on 15-20% - I know it can't hurt to ask, but .....

You'll also get a cash discount up north/in UK, and probably a better selection of higher spec cars. Buy where you get the best deal. Might not be worth it at the money you are spending, especially if shopping in mainland UK as you have flights and ferry costs to add to the mix.

What's the deal about buying a diesel up North with all the washing of fuel that goes on? Myth or reality?

Any truth in the rumour that if you have a Northern Ireland address for a while, you can skip the VRT payment. I heard of people who have rented a cheap rooms in Derry straight out of daft just to get an address up there?

Got a 02 Mondeo in the North about 2 years ago. Was warned before I bought it that the clutch was a problem in those Mondeos. Went on me a few weeks ago. Clutch kit alone was €932, then a day and a half labour on top of that. I'm sure they have the modified clutch in the 05/06 models, but it is something to checkout first.............
