Me and a few mates are planning on heading to Thailand for a month in July but with all the 'political unrest' or whatever, a few of them are having doubts. Personally, I'm still for going. I just wanted to ask if anyone here who was planning to travel to Thailand changed their plans?

I JUST LEFT BANGKOK 2 days ago in the middle of the madness and if you did not look for it you would not even know it was happening.
our train was cancelled but we just got a bus... bangkok has 20 million people and takes an hour before you leave it so i would not worry

I'm flying out on June 23rd.
Few of my mates are having second thoughts but the rest of us are still going regardless.

Its fine Thailand is very safe, the locals will do their best to avoid demonstrations near tourists, alot of that violence was on the outskirts of the city.

The only place to stay away from is the south of Thailand where there can be unrest, areas like Hat Yai, this area has a muslim majority and the army has fought with them for the past couple of years, alot of it wouldnt be reported on the news.

This is miles off the tourist track, you will probably go as far as Surat Thani to get a boat to Ko Samui which is only three quarters down the country.

Enjoy Thailand its a fantastic place to visit.

This comment if very inaccurate tbh.

Things have calmed down in Bangkok now but it'd be no surprise if the problems were to start up again in the near future. The political situation is very unstable at the moment.

In saying that I wouldn't cancel my plans to visit the country.

I was in Bangkok the week after the military coup in 2006 and during the state of emergency in September last year. Even though I was travelling alone, I felt perfectly safe, saw little or no drama and found it very easy to get to all the main tourist stuff without any problems. That's just my experience, but personally, if I had a flight booked for tomorrow, nothing I've seen on the news in the last few weeks would put me off going. Just keep your wits about you and don't do anything stupid. You're really just seeing the worst of it on tv but Thailand is massive - you can avoid trouble if you want to.

Somewhere down the line the s**t really is going to hit the fan here in Bangkok/Thailand.

People might be better off visiting the place before that time comes.

Yeah it seems like the two different groups could start squaring up to each other soon, especially after the PAD ( I think?) leader took a few bullets the other day. It appears to be an urban/rural divide that is splitting them. At least the army are always knocking about so I doubt if it would ever go to full scale civil war. And if the King shouts Stop! then they will, I don't think there is any other monarch in the world that commands so much respect amongst his subjects.

What I can't get my head around though is a bunch a country peasants protesting to re-instate a corrupt billionairre like Thaksin Sinawarta. It would be like an Irishman taking to the streets in support of Beverly Cooper Flynn, totally bizarre:eek:

The army is always around but is clearly aligned with one side. Whether it'd ever get to a stage where people are willing to revolt against this, I'm not sure.

As much as I detest Thaksin, he did actually do a few decent things which benefited the rural/poor during his time as PM. He also managed to give these people a political voice which they never have had before and a voice that the opposing side are none too happy with.

I can't imagine the situation improving before it get's worse.

    Anyway, come to Thailand!!!

    :pac:
