After my worst Easter ever courtesy of a toothache, the dentist removed my old filling yesterday and recommended root canal instead. I was charged €120 for the removal and a "dressing" yesterday and told the root canal treatment would be €700.

However I've noticed people mentioning crowns here yet this wasn't mentioned to me. Can I assume I'll be charged €820 in total for all the work necessary to give me a working tooth again and does this sound reasonable?

Nope you'll pay 700 for the Root Canal and then another probably 7-900 for a crown.

Sounds very expensive for a root canal

I have been to IFSC Dental Care and had RCT with DR Gaffney. I was charged 500 euro for RCT. I think it depends on the tooth and how many canals there are. I didnt need a crown a filling is enough but have been advised possible need one in the future. Again I think maybe it depends on the tooth. I found them to be very effecient and fitted me in when i was having tro9uble.:D

    Well,

The dental care requires great attention in every individual’s life. Most of the dental associations irrespective of their locations strongly advise dental treatments such as teeth cleanings, cosmetic dental treatments, tooth whitening and regular examining etc. They advise people to undergo all these dental treatments at least once for six months. This is because all these dental treatments help to avoid tooth decay as well as diseases which ate periodontal. Your dental insurance plans will surely cover all these treatments.

Welcome to the forum Robert. Can I take ift from you signature you are advocating a dental health book? Are you affiliated with the author? This is a Irish mostly forum and as such most threads revlve around the irish dental system. Few good dental insurance schemes exist and fewer people have them. Dentistry is mostly private here, as such threads about cost crop up frequently.

A root canal varies in price depending on the complexity, this is due to where the tooth is, how many roots, shape of the roots etc. Most teeth need a crown after a root canal except some front teeth occasionally. You dont have to have the crown immediatly but it can lead to a risk if tooth fracture that may require the removal of the tooth.

Although it seems expensive, it is more cost effective than replacing a missing tooth with a bridge or implant. I suppose it depends on "how attached" you are to that tooth.
