I'm moving to Japan soon and plan to buy a 350Z there but my license is for automatics only. So I need to take another test but my question is do I need to apply for a provisional license again or can I take the test by using my existing auto license?

    Many thanks,

    Nick

Depending on when you got your current licence you may need to do the theory test, apply for a permit, wait 6 months and apply for your test.

The only way to find out the correct answer for you is to call the RSA and ask them, as we don't know when you got your licence and what extra you need to pass a manual test.

So, why not buy an auto 350Z ? In their traffic, you'll be glad you did !

Thanks Del, I gave the RSA a call and I don't need to do the theory test but I need a learners permit and then apply for my test.

Hi GalwayTT, yeah could certainly do that but I don't plan driving around Tokyo as it would totally do my head in. I'm happier to go with the manual with such a big engined car, more fun. Anyway, it's about fecking time I got myself a proper license anyway!

I dunno, by all means to the licence thing anyway, but don't let that rule on the choice of car, necessarily.

The thing about big sports cars needing manual boxes is old hat: the new GT-R isn't manual..........performance is no longer penalised by an auto choice. In fact, double-clutch auto's (aka GT-R and VAG DSG, and Porsche PDK) actually out-peform manuals, these days.

O/T - if you do bring back a GT-R, does it make it under the 225g/CO2 km ? Otherwise you'll be needed 2k+ a year just to tax it, which will make it unsaleable, down the road........

My sig cars are the same. The manual hasn't left the garage for six months........why?....'cos it's manual. The Tip version is all things to all people, 90% of the time ! :D

Yup, €2000 a month is a bit mad but if you're gonna go over it it might as well be done in style ;) I'm not buying to sell, it for my own pleasure.

I take your point with the gearboxes, I just don't want my auto license to be a limitation for me. The GT-R box is incredible, looking forward to test driving one.
