Not really sure what the situation is regarding tax on used cars? What i mean is if i was to buy a car privately and the tax was gone since, say, october 2008, when would i have to pay tax from? Been looking at some ads on adverts.ie and the tax is out on some. I just wouldn't like ending up having to pay a big lump sum for arrears.

No worries, you won't have to pay tax for a period when you didn't own the car.

AFAIR, once you get the registration back from shannon, you can tax it from the first day you legally took posession.

I traded my car in today, it had 3/4 of a years tax left on it and the car I bought had none. Do I now have to go and spend more money on tax or can I transfer it over??? I really don't want to have to fork out another €285 for tax this year. :(

The tax stays with the car, so you'll have to pay again to tax your new car. To look on the bright side, you got more for your old car because it had 9 months tax on it.
