Encryption for dummies?

    In brief, NTL guy arrived without router so after a trip to Maplins we're now trying to set up our wifi. Problem is with the encryption.

    We've followed the instructions that came with the router but are having real problems, the manual in in gobbledegook!! Everytime we set an encryption key and try to connect with it it won't connect and we end up disabling it and starting again.

    It's a basic 54g wireless router, connected by a WLAN cable. Network is functioning, can log on but really want to secure asap. I've googled and tried over and over again but it just won't work.

    Any ideas? Or anyone got a babysteps simple English guide to doing this? Believe it or not I actually studied IT at one stage but software development was my thing so this hardware malarkey is a nightmare. OH will have to set this up so the plainer the language the more chance we have of success

    Thanks in advance

    Without telling me the make and model, I'll say: use WPA-PSK, also called WPA Pre-Shared-Key. You set a 22 long word, using letters and numbers, and some weird character (like @ or &) in the password. Could be Tom&Barrycaught300fish - it's hard to guess, and easy to remember. When connecting, select the WPA-PSK option, and type in the key.

    If you're using a Vista laptop, sometimes it can be tricky. If you're using a HP notebook, there's a driver I've found to help alot of the users connect to their home & work wifi.

    A new problem. Can connect to net using laptops but itouch wifi connects to the network but then safari can't access the server? Any ideas?

    Some of the itouch fora say switch to WEP but I don't want to do this if we can avoid it.

    Click on :
    Settings -> Wifi - > Other - >
    Name = SSID or name of your network
    Security = Whatever you have configured, WPA for WPA-PSK
    Click Back to Last page or "Other Network"
    Password should be available.Enter that and click Join

    Solved all our problems by going back to Maplins and switching their router for a Netgear one. All up and running now.

    Thanks for the help!
