Gearing Advice.

I plan on doing the Wicklow 200 in June. I am a casual cyclist and I have a few 100k spins under my belt already so general fitness won't be a problem.
My gears are 53/39 T crankset with a 11/21 T freewheel. I am wondering will I struggle on the major climbs with these gears. Should I consider getting a "granny" ring? is it possible to fit one?
    All advice greatly appreciated!

I was facing a similar issue a while ago. I got good advice here (see thread). My largest rear sprocket was 21 teeth - I found getting up steep hills near impossible. Instead of getting a granny ring at the front I got a new rear cassette that went up to 28 teeth, and it's all good now.

Nah, maybe just swap out the rear cassette for a 25 or 27. Any chance you live near wicklow and could head out on some of the climbs?

You must have a decent level of power if you cycle a 39-21 without too much bother, unless you are purely a flats cyclist

Like the guys above said, get an 11-27 cassette. Also, if you're not regularly climbing any of the Wicklow mountains, get out there and give them a go if possible -they make a big difference to the route, and the 200 route is not like 200km on the flat by any means!

yea defo get a 25 at least, but remember that once you are up a climb you have Time to recover on the way down before the next one !!!

Trouble is, you go so fast on the way down that your recovery time is over really quickly! (Never fails to disappoint me, that.)

Thanks for the advice lads. I will definitely tackle the Sally Gap in the near future and see what pain awaits me in June!

Yeah you should come on boards spins. The Sally Gap is a regular feature.
