The tax office will have a copy of it I think

I never got mine from a previous employer because I moved and didn't give him a forwarding address (no reason to as he had my mobile) and the revenue had it on hand for when I started my next job.

I was missing a p45 for the mortgage a few years back, As best as i can recall i had to apply for a p21 in the tax office. Took 6-8 weeks to get back then.

Also, if your P45 is from 2008 any new employers in 2009 don't need it. You only need P45s if you've held previous employment in the same tax year. They're worthless after the tax year is up, pretty much.

the main benefit of giving your P45 to an employer is to avoid emergency tax. But you can circumvent this also by getting the emploers tax registration number, and ringing the revenue yourself, telling them your PPS no, start date etc and they then can send out a tax credits statement to your employer, so you souldn't be put on emergency tax, or if you are it should not be for too long.

As mentioned your p45 for 2008 is no use now in 2009 for figures, your new employer has the option to record your start date "with out a p45" and they are then send on your tax credits,if you are worried that you will be one emergency tax for to long you can as stated put in a call to the tax office regestering yourself with your new employer - you will just need the tax number of the new job

    hey guys,
Im still abit confused. I worked from last may (08) till this april(09). I started a new job in april this year. I gave the tax office my details so i wasnt emergency taxed while i waited for my p45 from my previous employer. They said they sent it but it never arrived (got lost in the post). I still dont have the p45. I was wondering do i need my p45? (not very good at all this stuff sori if the questions seem basic!)
The previous employer said that i could ask my new employer for a p60 or something, and i could sign that and send that into the tax office, and tat should sort it. But i dont really understand!
Basically all i need to know is do i need the p45 now?

Yeah, you still need your P45.

Your P45 tells your new employer how much tax you have paid this year. The amount of tax you have paid will affect how much tax you will pay for the rest of the year. For example, if your previous employer over-taxed you, you will pay less tax in the new job to balance things out.

The P45 was never lost in the post. I used to deal with the morons that are payroll and they are the laziest ****s in the world (about as bad as HR). Tell them you are going to drop into their office to pick up the P45, or contact revenue and tell them they won't give you a P45. They will sort it out for you.
