I'm building a 3000sqft dormer house in Monaghan. Been quoted 23000 euro to install Geothermal UFH/heat pump upstairs and down. Can anyone tell me if that's expensive or about right? Bit cautious as it's a huge lump of our mortgage!

    Sounds typical

What Kw rating is the heat pump . How did they arrive at that figure ?

Is the ground collector pipework included ? Are the associated site works included ?

What independent test rating for the COP were you presented with ?

.... why don't you minimize your demand for heat in the first place by highly insulating and achieving high levels of air tightness
    ...... no heat pump
    ......... no boiler

Take the running costs of a geothermal into account before you invest, they aren't cheap.

Further to what Sinnerboy has said, can I suggest that you think further down the line.
You are installing a heat energy source which will have a probable life expectancy of 30/40 years. A source powered by electric energy which in Ireland is raised from a primary energy source at 40% efficiency and a further 14% or so is lost in the network. Therefore by the time it gets to you it has taken 3 units to deliver each unit. You then convert this energy to heat energy at a possible COP of 4.5 to 1 at best and I have recently experienced a system which had a measured COP of less than 2 to 1. This system ran for nearly 20 hours on a number of days during the cold spell. A very expensive electric heating system in economic, energy resources and emission terms. Just imagine how this will fit within our energy and emission requirements in the next decade alone.

this is most important as when the system is installed, its very difficult to undo.

Once again, dont think in todays terms - reduce - reduce - reduce

I would not do this for the following reasos which are // to the thinking of the others.
Firstly I would insulate etc as suggested above to the best of ur financial ability:)

secondly being reliant on a very heavy power requirement is a bad idea in my view: am guessing it is many kWs.
Just suppose u wanted to have a backup elec jennie or go off grid with your system, solar PV and or wind will not be enough for ur geothermal, where as if u had a wood pellet boiler, the power requirement is very small.

The backup elec jennie would be hugh

I was reminded of this issue as we have had 3 by 5hr power outages in the last 6 weeks.

My 1500W inverter connected to the car battery did the basics, including the gas fired CH

    Hey,

we've closed the door on our spec finally. We are going with geothermal. It is costing us approx €20k (supplied and installed) with UFH throughout and a 300litre water cylinder. Our house is 2100sq ft.

I will happily forward you on the name of the company - leading supplier in the midlands.

I've heard nightmare stories about wood pellets and oil is a diminishing resource. Two friends have told me that geo-thermal is not cheap heat but for the same money you are getting much more heat (if that makes sense). Over the course of 12 months it appears to balance itself out.

If you take oil as being the alternative, if you stick in a good quality stove (eg Waterford Stanley) as a backup that is about 6k. Geo-thermal should also deliver your hot water needs so that balances out outlay costs solar panels.

I'd be happy to pass the suppliers details onto you if want - they were the cheapest quote we got (could even be the same one you have already!)

    Cheers
    D.

Hi all, I am starting a 2000sq/f house. Solid block walls with kingspan xtratherm insulation. Just wondering if there is some one out there with this approx size house and construction using a geothermal heatpump with underfloor heating? I am keen to know what the average ESB running costs are. Hope someone can help me.

    Cheers
    James

I'm building a 3100 sqft house and getting Geothermal heat pump, UFH up and down installed, 1st and 2nd fix plumbing all for €19k

That price excludes well drilling and bathroom suites

    Hi Quazzie,
Just wondering what make/model of pump you are installing? How many kw does it produce.

Did they give you any indication of how much it would cost to run a year.

How have you insulated your house?

I'm in process of making the a decision on this.

I'd also love to get the name of your suppliers..

    Cheers...

    Hi All

I thought I would throw in my recent experience in this.

I have a 3200 square foot house being build. I have a 130mm cavity in my walls, with a bonded bead injected directly in. I have over 120mm of floor insulation and finally the attics are sealed. I have underfloor heating on all 3 floors.

I am going for an airtight house and hoping that I can keep as much heat in the house as possible (currently looking at windows).

So regarding the heating system, I have Heat Recovery venillation running through out the house. A 13kw Heat Pump which is drawing heat from a 600 meter squared grid in the garden.

The entire system is expected to cost me around €20,000, including all installations and the various warranties on design, performance etc.

I am hoping that down the line when wind turbines mature for the domestic market that I could invest in one which would partially offset the cost of geothermal.

I am still unsure about the overall advantages of Geothermal, but I am less convinced by the other alternatives (oil, wood pellet, solid fuels etc.)

How is everyone else finding their systems, meeting your expectations?

    Hi ninjaBob,

Sorry for jumping on an old thread but I am considering a similar setup to you and it would be great to hear how you are finding the system after a few years. Have you noticed much of an increase on your electricity bill? Is the system sufficient to provide all heat and hot water needs?

Also, does anyone know if the costs of Geothermal has come down in recent years?
