well basically im looking to buy a b5.5 passat 01-05, tdi but im finding it hard to get my head around the whole Tdi, red I,red DI setup,I know the (tdi) is basic 100bhp (the red I) is a little more powered 110bhp and the (red di)130bhp (is it 5 or six speed or either?)is a little more powerful than the (red i) but on some of the ads on carzone the title states the car is 130bhp but there may only be a red I in the pics,or 110bhp and there is a red (DI)in the pics or 110bhp and the tdi is fully silver,im finding it kinda confusing as they seem to be assigning red letters randomly and what im wondering is there any solid way to tell for definite which is which ? and more importantly is there much power difference between the 100bhp and the 130bhp accelaration wise could a 130bhp saloon pull off 0-60 much quicker than a 100bhp??,
    Thanks

You can't tell the BHP by the colour of the TDI

You have to check either the sticker in the boot or on the engine plate.

Seems like Passats are becoming more and more popular these days. A lot of these threads popping up.

Edit: This thread might help you http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=59772595#post59772595

And the difference between the 100 and 130 engine is huge. First 100 I drove was advertise as 130 with the red DI. I was TOTALLY convinced the turbo was not working. I learned quick enough how to tell the power output of these engines because of the amount of dealerships not having a clue and sometimes lying.

so basically the little colors on the tdi badge dont serve much purpose?where abouts is the sticker in the boot?
    Thanks for the link :D

You will be looking for the sticker inside the boot. Near the spare wheel

If the Passat has a service record, on the first page there is a sticker that states chassis no. and other information useful for main dealers usually.
this stated the kilowatts or power for the particular cra.
    The 100bhp engine is 74Kw & 130bhp is 96KW.
also majority of 130bhp Passats sold in Irl were 6 speed gearboxes.
    Hope this helps

There was no 110bhp in the 5.5 Passat. Only 100 and 130. And you can't tell by the badge, as you've seen yourself the badge colours vary as much as the actual car colours!

so say for example this car then it claims to be 130bhp but only has a redI could it still be a 130bhp or could the owner be lying to make his car more popular? so basically is the only way to know for sure to go and check it out in person??

That car is a UK import so it is difficult to tell whether it is 100bhp or 130bhp without seeing the V5 documents. BTW is it just me or those that interior look very worn for a car that has only covered 60k miles? Now I am not saying that the mileage is not genuine but I would expect the interior to be in better shape on a diesel car with such low mileage.

Looks a little. Just saggy , but not worn down too much. The gear stick leather is still is good nick. Mine has 105k miles on it and the gear stick leather is quite worn.
