    Check out www.studentfinance.ie
It explains the Maintenance Grant and the Back To Education Allowance there in great detail.

As far as i know a student can't claim the dole and I think you have to meet certain requirements before you can get the full grant but you should be able to get the grant but I'm not sure how much it is.

If your unemployed for more than 12 months you can go on a back to education grant from social welfare Back to Education. Then you can apply for a special needs maintainence grant from the vec which is means tested on the previous years earnings Maintenance grant schemes for students on third-level course.

Hope this can be of help

Wondering if anybody can help me out here. I recently completed 2 years of a Foundation Degree in the U.K. which is the equivalent of a FETAC Level 6 here but then went on to an add on year but dropped out due to a death in the family. That was in April 2008 but I'm hoping to go back to education as a mature student in Sept 2009. I was wondering would I still be eligible for a grant as now I am going back as an undergraduate?? I have a sneaking suspicion that the year that I dropped out will count as an undergraduate so I may not be eligible. Will this just count for one year of my undergraduate?? There's nowhere on studentfinance that explains that situation. Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
