Extracting recordings from UPC Digital+

    Hi All,

I've been reading through some threads around the UPC system as I'm intrigued by the possibility of getting the Digital setup cheaper than currently what I'm paying for analogue, and still being able to get the analogue channels on a separate TV or routed through a tuner on my old VCR.

Something I've been wondering has anyone tried to do is rip the recordings from the DVR, I've seen a lot of complaints about recordings going missing etc with the Digital+ and that'd wreck my head if I recorded something only for it to go missing before I get a chance to watch it.
Being able to extract them out to a separate media player or streamer to watch at my convenience with less risk of dissapearing would probably make my mind up to go with or without the DVR.
Does anyone know if this is possible or has tried to do this successfully/unsuccessfully?

    Thanks for any comments

The only way is to play the recordings and capture them somehow via the SCART output, either via some kind of TV capture card on the PC, or onto a DVD recorder. There is no way to get the recordings off the hard disk in any digital format .. for a start the disk uses a proprietary format, and secondly they're encrypted.

    Thanks for the info Alun,

I think playing back the programmes and recording them to an external DVD recorder sounds a little overkill, if I have time to do this then I probably would have time to watch them, if of course they haven't vanished by then as others have experienced :(

Suppose I might give it a try out for the extra couple of yoyo's a month. Maybe later software might clear this up a bit and as some people have posted when the new Nagra encryption is fully rolled out it might stop happening.

One last q if possible, with the Digital+ is it a second box or do you get a different model STB than the standard Digital Value

    Cheers

Its one STB for the DVR and I would personally doubt that the missing recordings thing is due to whichever version of Nagra. That's much more likely to be cleared up by a UPC software upgrade. That said it doesn't happen too often for me.

Actually strangely enough it hasn't happened to me for ages now ... it could be the latest s/w upgrade,or also the fact that I recently got a new box and card as my old one died in an infinite software upgrade loop, I don't know.

When they first launched the DVR, it was strictly one per account, but by last June/July they allowed multiple PVR's per account, not sure if it has changes since, a quick call to 1908 should confirm.

There is no limit any more .... I have a second one, no problem getting it. Install was free too , so only the €5 per month extra.
