I think this is the right forum for this query.

I purchased my own domain and setup a wordpress.org blog on it. Have the blog working and the theme sorted. But I have a problem setting the url for the blog.

The blog currently resides at http://koth.ie/wordpress/ but I want it to be appear at http://koth.ie. I've done a fair amount of searching on this. But I can't find anything to help me sort the problem.

I have little or no knowledge of setting up a website, so it could be something simple.

Would be grateful for any help.

Normally, what you should have done is just upload the files inside the 'Wordpress' folder. But you uploaded the whole 'Wordpress' folder which gave you the...
    http://koth.ie/wordpress/

So... if yopu had to rename the wordpress folder 'jack' your URL would have been...
    http://koth.ie/jack/

You can still just move the installaion if you dont want the hassle of reinstalling by reading this...

It's fairly straightforward but read it carefully though as it could save you a load of heartache in the end.

Thanks for that. I'm looking at the files/folders for the domain via ftp. I can't find any wordpress folder.

I found a folder in the webapps directory which looks like it has the wordpress files in it. I copied the files to the koth.ie directory.

If I then go to the wordpress.org control panel, and change the wordpress url and blog url I can't get back into the wordpress control panel at all.

On some sites I keep my Wordpress installation in a 'wordpress' directory - so, mydomain.com/wordpress/. But the URL for the site is still 'mydomain.com'. The trick is to copy the 'index.php' file to the directory where you want browsers to find the site. You need to edit the 'index.php' file to find the Wordpress installation, and you need to move the .htaccess file to be in the same directory as the 'index.php' file.

In your example, you would have moved or copied your 'index.php' file and the .htaccess file from the /wordpress directory to the webserver root (where you put your 'wordpress' directory). Then you would have to edit 'index.php' so that 'require('./wp-blog-header.php');' becomes 'require('./wordpress/wp-blog-header.php');' and make the .htaccess file writable, which is a little trickier if you haven't done it before (the Wordpress site has detailed explanations of it).

This might not make an awful lot of sense on first read, but it's actually quite simple and means you can keep your Wordpress files tidied away in a sub-directory.
