I want to have one last stab at trying to get my LX5090 to work and was wondering what other country has the same DTT standard ie MPEG4 as us? I selected France and Netherlands but just in case can anyone confirm a country that is defecnitly same as us?

I am pretty sure now that UK LX5090 will not accept MPEG4 but need conclusive proof before I take it further.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_terrestrial_television

About 16 same as us (MPEG4 only) and some others using MPG4 & MPEG2.

That set is no good for MPEG4 without an external set-box.

    http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/products/62/63/413/PDP-LX5090/specs.html

    DVB-T Compliant Yes
    # Modulation COFDM (2k / 8k)
    # Video decoding MPEG2 MP@ML
    # Audio Decoding MPEG1 Layer 1&2, AC-3

The strict answer is NONE as the other MPEG4 countries do not use MHEG5. The only EU country using MHEG5 is the UK which uses MPEG2. Ireland out on a limb again, but who cares as the investment community have pulled the plug on Ireland alas....

First off GBCullen a suggestion to the problem of you buying the wrong tv is in the other thread that you posted in.

NZ has the very same spec as us.

There are many EU countries in the EU, one of which has the largest popluation in 61million uses MPEG4 ie France.

MHEG5 is for delivery for fancy colurful teletext within frames. Normal teletext is still broadcast anyhow. It does not preclude you from watching DTT anyhow.

The investment community has pulled the plug ?

Even if that were true, does it make any odds

It does a lot more than that, providing "red button" services.

The cost of adding a software 'blob' to provide MHEG5 to a box with MPEG4 is trivial ....unlike the cost of adding a VHF tuner to a UHF tuner in order to make a UK TV work in Ireland .

Oh I know what it does and doesnt do and what it is likely to be deployed for.

    More importantly, do you ?

VHF will be gone as far as TV is concerned in the next 3 years.

This is a list I posted previously

    France (MPEG2&4)
    Greece
    Hungary
    Ireland
    Latvia
    Lithuania
    Montenegro
    Norway
    Poland
    Portugal
    Romania
    Russia
    Slovenia
    Slovakia
    Sweden (migrating to MPEG4)
    Ukraine

The standard chosen for Irish DTT allows the old analogue teletext standard (EBU Teletext) to be broadcast unlike in the UK where teletext is MHEG-5 only. So until the broadcasters decide to switch off analogue teletext MHEG-5 receivers won't be 100% necessary.

Which are a pain. Let's just have real TV channels. There is NO return channel and no dedicated downlink. So it's just a menu into a carousel.

Many / most "interactive" services are rubbish compared to Internet. Just as Internet is poor compared to Cable/Terrestrial/Satellite for Broadcast TV.

About the only useful extra above a version of Teletext with pictures is a more featured EPG. But even with standard DVB epg you can do a lot.

If there is Teletext and full DVB epg, then you won't miss MHEG5.

BTW in 1970s teletext was demonstrated with photos. Very slow update due to bandwidth of the carousel. I always wondered why that was not resurrected on Digital, as Teletext on Digital is not limited to the data rate of Analogue TV. The "open TV" method used on Sky for Text + pictures is a pig to program. It's a C API.

    I agree.

MHEG5 does allow for pic advertising as evidenced by Kia ads on MHEG5 text being broadcast at present.

More importantly the EPG will broadcast via EIT - DVB SI. Contrary to popular belief here, RTE do not plan on using MHEG5 to design a standalone epg.

Strangely FTA sat channels continue to broadcast a limited non MHEG5 teletext service on sat.

    There are a few exceptions:

The Red button service on SkyNews on Sky Digital and the Red button service on the BBC channels on Freesat.

The speed of the Red Button service on Freesat Boxes makes its a pleasure to use..

The red button service on ITV channels is a good example of the rubbish watty is referring to.

CNN had at one stage excellent teletext on Sat. Gone now. The Irish channels teletext worked on FTA sat receiver last time I looked. Full service/

If RTE stick to this " EIT - DVB SI" plan it will be great as all manner of generic MPEG4 setbox -pvr may then work for recording and makes PC based DTT less of a pain.

    We don't need the MHEG5 adverts :)
