Macbooks

I'm looking at laptops for college, I would be using it primarily for film editing but also for the usual.. internet, IM, photos, word processing.

I like the Macbook Pro with 17" screen but it's very expensive... the normal Macbook would be more in my price range but I notice it has no firewire socket which would be a problem when I want to edit videos... is there a way around this?

Does anybody have an opinion on macbooks in general? (keeping in mind that macs are the best in the business for editing and I would invest in some version of final cut in the future)

    Thanks.

I imagine you could get an express card with firewire ports. Do the macs have express cards?

I have a MacBook. Bloody marvelous. :D Easy to use and it has a firewire connection (not bought in this country). Doddle to make up DVDs even for a media dingbat like me. I find it so easy to use that I'm considering ditching my doddery PC for an iMac or the Mac Pro despite the cost and just having a laptop for any MS stuff which I need.

the new aluminium macbook doesn't have FW or an express card slot sadly.

however, the old white macbook is still available and has a FW400 port. Also it's the cheapest macbook around and if you can student discount through your college you should save another 8-10%. load it to the gills with ram and you'll be all set!

Or save money and buy a PC.

Money you save will buy you a better machine by far internally. You get more ports, more power, more media, and if you buy well, a better package. Dell Studio XPS 16 will be cheaper than a 17 inch Macbook pro by far (Maxes out at around 1500 all in). It also looks better. It's not so bright and noticeable. It's more subdued and classy.

Professional grade editing software, if you so want. Or even decent grade software. Do your reasearch on this. I don't know video editing software.

DvD Burning is fine. There're plenty of freeware programs out there. Or you can 'acquire' Nero. Either or.

You can actually dismantle and do home maintance on some Laptops without voiding your warranty. Dell's XPS techs even come to your house if there's a problem, and the manual includes some instructions for maintance.
