Any of the Archos media players should play those files without transcoding

I'm not sure. Do you mean the aspect ratio?

I dont remember. I was going to buy one before but i found out you still had to do some converting for xvids to play on it(even though they remain an xvid)

    Cant find the link now

I am not sure what you mean. I have an Archos 605 WIFI and 99% of downloaded Xvid and Divx videos play without any manipulation.

The odd video may have a strange codec not supported by the Archos but I just re-encode those on my PC.

By the way there is an Irish guy selling refurbished Archos PMPs on Ebay at good prices. I don't know anyone who has bought from him but he looks legit according to his feedback.

    Luzerntech?

I bought a 605 wifi off them, it failed after 3 days, but there was no hassle returning for a refund (they would have replaced but there was none instock at the time).

Because of that(the ease of return) i bought off them again when they had more in stock, they waived the delivery charge due to the previous failure, and its still going strong.

I would recommend them, as if the unit is dodgy, it will fail within the 3 month warranty they give. If not its happy days as they are relatively cheap, i got 40gb one for €140 ;)

The 605 doesnt have a fantastic screen (I have one), it's fairly dull and the colours are washed out. Its also a bit blurry despite the high res, probably on account of the anti-reflective coating. The battery life isn't great either, about 3-4hrs.

But it does play almost every Xvid i've throw at it. It won't play avi files (the standard container for Xvid) over 2GB, and to play anything with AC3 sound you'll need to shell out for a plugin (€20 if I recall). But apart from that it's fairly good.

The Archos 5 (newer replacement for the 605) does have a better screen, and the same kind of codec support. But it also shares the poor battery life, and actually ive heard a lot of complaints about it, in terms of reliability, locking up etc.

The Cowon A3 is fairly old (and bulky), but still a nice player with good battery life and support.

Yeah, that's him. However he has free shipping now to Ireland.

I've seen some bad reviews of that Luzerntech shop, making me afraid of buying from them
