Would like to get opinions on what is more practical for hauling boards, change in, sleep in and comfort. Which is more practical - a commerical vehicle like a pajero/land cruiser or something like a vw transporter/transit.

i've a swb landcruiser, non commercial

when you let the front seat down and the back seat down you can fit
4-5 boards in (max length about 8ft) quick loading is great.
if you've anything on the roof you gotta watch out for height restrictions!

as for sleeping in it sux completely, a lwb commercial might be good tho with a matress

also changin would be a struggle in the cruiser, even in a commercial as the floor to ceiling height isnt all that great.

i think for a pure surfmobile a van > jeep! (although i've never owned a van)

get a van, either of the above would do the job for what you are looking for. at a guess i think the vans are more fuel efficient than the 4x4's, anyone any thoughts on this?
