I'm new to boards and this is my forst post(although i've been stalking the forum for a few months now) and have decided to seek your opinion.

I'm a college student on a budget, i cycle every weekday on my piece of junk MTB about 16km on average and its a killer seeing people three times my age rip by me on a nice racer...id like to branch out on the weekends to go for a good ould trek up to howth etc etc...

i've been looking at the dawes discovery 301 http://www.dawescycles.com/p-162-discovery-301-gents.aspx im not looking for a bike to race in, but something that i can pick up a bit of speed when i need it.

the people in the bike shop told me this is the one to go for, retails for around 400-ish(my max budget)!

what do you think i should do, caz i havnt found much info on this bike on any forum.

    cheers.:D

I use a Dawes Kalahari to commute in. It's excellent and I recommend Daws highly. I use 700x35c tyres on it which is wider than on a road/racing bike but thinner than an MTB. The balance is right for the often potholed roads of Dublin.

Mind you, just because you don't intend to race is no reason not to consider a road bike as a commuting vehicle. Hybrids are great but they are heavier than racers.

Dawes make decent good value hybrids, that and (more expensive) touring bikes are their speciality. I have a Discovery 201 as my hack bike and it has provided me with many years of service; the 301 would be a slight step up from that. Make sure you get the rigid fork, suspension for on-road use is a heavy waste of money. If you wanted something a bit faster I am selling my touring bike, 58cm (6ft) 9x3/27 speed 105 and comes with rack and mudguards, looking for €475 but negotiable.
