Go onto cbg.ie or one of the other Irish car sites. Do a search of cars for sale for the same make, model & year as your car and you will see what price other people are asking.

You will be hard pushed to find a garage to sell it to unless you are doing a trade in & even then, they won't offer you a whole lot.

I'd say you'd be lucky to get €4 -€5k in a private sale. I got a 05 Golf the other day - 28,000 on the clock for €7k. Prices have gone down seriously in recent months.

I'd get the NCT done on it as if you are trying to sell it privately it will put a lot of potential buyers off.

    Private or in the trade?

The NCT only costs €50 and an hour of your time unless you feel there are major things wrong with the car. In these times no garage will buy a used car from you for cash, they are finding it difficult to sell their own stock. If a garage was interested they would offer you almost nothing for it as they would have to NCT it, clean it, service it and offer warranty on it before reselling it.

Your best bet is to NCT it and try selling it privately, the Polo still has a following especially among young ladies who like the looks and low running costs so priced realistically it should eventually sell.

If you really want cash for it quick, my advice is as follows
    1. put it through the NCT
    2. have it cleaned inside and out (try the friendly chaps at your local Polish hand car wash)
    3. stick it in the Buy and Sell and adverts.ie (don't waste your money on carzone)
    4. park it somewhere with a 'for sale' sign in the window where a lot of people will see it - once heard of a lad parking his car near the RDS for the Ideal Homes exhibition
    5. Sign reads - For Sale: 'VW Polo, NCT 05/11, careful lady owner, €(very competive price)' - everyone loves these kind of cars, should be gone by the weekend :p

That used to be a good way of selling a car until it became illegal.
I've seen the council clamp down on this big time near me. It's probably the same throughout the country.

If you really need the cash and are under time pressure then sell it at auction

NCT it, give it a good clean inside and out-maybe a proper valet-, if you have a service history or any receipts put them together and stick it for sale in the local rag and carzone at a price significantly cheaper than anything else. You should sell it easily like that and the price you get will be much higher than what a dealer will offer if they even want it. Otherwise auction with a decent reserve on it
