Have a relative living in North West Donegal, nearest town Gortahork. He wants to cancel his sky subscription but is wondering what his chances of decent reception on the Irish channels are with an aerial.

I live in Sligo & have 2 TVs working on aerials - the oul dog's ears ones and the picture is perfect on RTE 1 & 2 and a littel bit fuzzy on TV3, which I rarely watch anyway.

You can also buy aerials these days with built in signal boosters from the likes of Argos.

One thinh to note though - the 2 tvs I mentioned are old portable tvs - I tried using an aerial on the other tv (a Sony Bravia) & couldn't pick up a signal.

It is fine for RTE1 RTE 2 and TG4 but not for TV3 who refuse to pay for carriage in Donegal .

TV3 is available from Holywell Hill (Ch.29).

Also from Truskmore, which covers some of South Donegal.

TV3 is carried on very few relays.

Yes. You need a broadband UHF aerial and possibly a masthead amp.

    Hi There,
Contact RTE and ask them what type ariel you need to best receive the Irish channels in your area, use transmission@rte.ie.
Also ask where the nearest transmitter to your location is, then point ariels in that direction.

Without knowing the area much, I'd reckon either the Arran Mhor or Fanad relays would be receivable in around the area, though there also might be another small relay close to the village. A fixed UHF aerial should do the trick for RTÉ 1, 2 and TG4 though TV3 will not be available.
