What size is the one in your ps3? 40, 60, 80gb?

You will need an external HDD of about the same size (An Ipod/other HDD Mp3 player would work would work if you didn't have one-as long as it big enough). If you have space issues then maybe you could delete demos or transfer music/Videos to your PC cos I am sure what you really want to back up is game saves, installs and PSN games on your HDD.

Anyway, then you plug in the device and from System Settings just choose Backup Utility (It will take a while).

Once your new HDD is properly installed then just hook up your external device to the PS3 and choose the Restore option from Daily Backup.

(You might want to purchase an enclosure for your old HDD so you can use it as a External HDD-They cost about 20e or less).

Transfer all the movies to a PC using your memory stick (I imagine it will take a while).

Then delete them from the PS3 HDD. Check see how much space you are still taking up at that stage (It will need to be less than whatever your memory stick holds to do the backup-probably unlikely unless you have a large stick).

i have a 1GB mp3 player i think they can be used as memory sticks yes?to be honest the game saves arnt that important either its just the map packs lol is their a way to back them up?or will i have to ask my friend can i download them again?

You can't back up games or DLC individually. It is either via the Backup utility or nothing.

Downloading them again wouldn't be a huge deal, would it? Should only be a few hundred MBs.

Ah come on man, how on earth would I know how much space a system backup on your ps3 would take. Once youve taken everything off it you can just chech system settings and then system information (I think) to check how much space is currently being taken up on the HDD.
