Insurance (South vs North)

    Hi all

I'm a 26yr old with 2yrs NCB in my own name and a further 4 years named experience on a parents policy.

I'm looking for insurance but so far the best of the online company quotes is about €1600 for the car I want to buy. To get a comparison I checked how much it would be to insure if I was still up home in the North and it came out to £740 sterling which seems decent to me, there was even a few quotes in the 800-900 range.

I've no points and have had a full licence for 6 years, a provisional for 4 before that.

Can anyone suggest who might give me a reasonable quote or should I just pack my bags and go back up home?

    Thanks!

Get out the Golden Pages and ring around for the best quote.

I have similar insurance details to you, I was getting lollerskates quotes from any of the big comapnies for a 2l car. I went with a broker and got comprehensive for 650 euro. The online dealers have some good quotes too, the AA quoted something similar with AXA. Seems going direct is a crazy idea nowadays.

It's really annoying alright. I paid 1200 euro last year on insurance (3rd party), I got the same quote this year, even though I'm a year older and an extra years NCB. So I'm 24, have 2 years NCB, I was a named driver before that, full license for 3 years, never any points, yet because I'm a male I pay more than double what a girl would pay. The only thing I can do to get my insurance down is become a girl basically. Anyway, I sold my car before I had to renew, the cost of insurance being the major reason.

Also, I put in the same car (2.0 406 coupe) into quinn's online system, put everything the same except me down as being 25 (presuming it's this time next year when I get a car again) and the quote was now 1600?? How does that work?

Agreed. Ring and get a quote. Then keep ringing around until you get at least 8 quotes. Group the closer ones together and ring them back, bargaining each one down by quoting the competion values to them. Every time, just say, thanks, I will be back to you. Eventully you get to the lowest quote. Make sure to get the cover you want like windscreen cover included etc.

its really annoying - considering how much cheaper it is in the north and the north generally has one of the worst set of crash stats in europe

thats a fair strategy alright - bit time consuming but i suppose they're counting on people just going with the onscreen one
