got my nct booked for next saturday...

    couple of questions:

should i take the induction kit out?

my back right electric window isnt working too quickly, should i get that looked at?

what are the main points of failure for most cars, so i can them checked.

    thanks.

Thats the guide. Most common failures that I've heard of would be bald tyres/blown and misaligned bulbs/reg plates (must have county in irish at the top). These are all easily checked yourself before the test.

I would remove the induction kit and put the manufacturers spec induction chamber/air box/air filter back on. I doubt an aftermarket induction kit would be a legit fail provided it is installed correctly and intended for your car (not some hacked on Halfords job to make the car louder/less efficient).

They didn't check my windows last time as I had the drivers side already rolled down. but as long as it does open you shouldn't be in trouble.

    thanks man...

ill take the induction kit out so and roll down the windows lol

booked it this morning and got a test for next saturday, which is grand because of the bank holiday weekend coming up.

Mine was given and advisory 'fail' last year, cos the driver's door didn't close properly - it wasn't dangerous, just needed a nudge from outside, which obviously you can't do when you're in the car! - I got it fixed took the car back at my own discretion [no charge] and the fella only looked to make sure the door was fully closed ...

oh and if your car's a hatchback and you've had the back seat down - for pete's sakes make sure the seatbelts and their clips are back in their proper place!

Another tip, fasten all the seat belts. If they don't work, you'll fail. Get a friend to check the your bulbs with you aswell- theyre just small things that people fail on!
You're lucky you booked when you did seeing as everyone will be ringing up tomorrow with the new laws coming in!
    Good luck with it.

Get your headlights aligned - should cost about €20 in a garage.

Check your oil, coolant level and tyre pressures. Have a friend check that all your lights are working.

Bring it for a good hard drive (60mph in 3rd gear) when the engine has reached operating temperature. This will clear a lot of crap out of the exhaust and warm up your cat so it'll be doing it's job.

If it does fail, you'll have the simple items checked - just bring your fail sheet to your local garage/mechanic.

The rear electric window won't fail the test - it would if it was the drivers.

do you reckon i should have all the windows half way down for the test?

    No - why?

no reason in particular... just to show they are working i guess.

are they tough on tyre pressure?

You don't have to - they only check the drivers window.

I only threw the tyre pressures in because it's good practice to check them! They won't say anything unless the tyre looks flat!

yeha thats grand so... was reading there they can fail you for having a lack of water in your resevoir for the window wipers... that seems a bit excessive

Dont meant to hijack this thread but seems pointless setting up a new one for the same thing, questions about the NCT.

I have a car with a roll cage and a 3 point harness which is due NCT shortly. I just want to know will these be a issue or has anyone been through the test with them ?

    Thanks

    Jessie

Driving half blind because you can't clean the windscreen properly after getting splashed with something is a bit excessive too.

yeah but thats a fairly extreme example isnt it?

surely they could just say fill the thing up rather than make you re-do the test.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 423 ✭✭je55ie

Im sure they would unless you met a really sticky person but its a simple thing to rectify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,798 ✭✭✭✭DrumSteve

yeah just put some water in i guess haha

Just put it through the test and rectify anything that they point out, if you fail on anything. Can only work out better than falsely pre-empting something that might come up.
As for the windsecreen washer reservoir being empty... I don't know what to say

There is a requirement for a fully working windscreen washer for the test .. not an unreasonable requirement IMO. So, how are they going to test it if there's no water in it? Just making a whirring noise isn't really enough is it now?

I've put a car through an NCT test with an AEM V2 induction kit, no need to put the OEM airbox back, it wont effect emissions or anything like that.
