sorry but simple answer is no:(

All Irish channels are subscription dependant via satelite.

It is only because of our small population that our channels get comparitive cheap rates for popular programmes.

T.G.4 have used this to big advantage as they often get major drama&sport events very cheaply.

rights owners charge according to the potentiol audiance size(higher the audience, higher the potentiol revenue from adverts,it often works in our favour,we get to see final episodes of most shows long before the U.K,if like Itv&Bbc we broadcast a clear(no card required)signal via satelite we would most likely be only on series 1 of the simpsons now:)

Just on the subject of 3e. Is me imagining things? or back in the day when it was Channel 6, didn't they transmit in widescreen?. (Apart form material produced in 4:3 that is) But now they seem to be permanently in 4:3 ratio. I wonder why their new owners done that. Mind you it's not a channel we watch that much. TBH if it disappeared altogether I don't think we'd miss it at all!

Sorry but 3e is part of the Varity pack. And I doubt it will go FTA anytime soon.

They are transmitting their widescreen programmes, in widescreen, but they don't seem to be turning on the widescreen "flag", which leaves the TV in 4:3 display mode and a very warped looking picture - you need to manually change the TV picture format. Don't really watch much of 3e for it to be a problem anyway so it's grand! :p

tv3 are trying to get the Govt to accept 3e as a must carry on PSB for DTT.

yes it's a shame we, in this brilliant little country, need 1). an aerial to get 4 PSB channels and 2). a satellite dish to avail of the 1,000's of free sat channels. It makes no sense.

Mind you I can now finally get a decent picture with the DTT even though I had to pay for a license for years to get snow on my TV!

There definitely aren't 4 PSB channels!

The original remit for TG4 might have been as one, and RTE might "officially" be one (with 2 TV stations) but content-wise we pretty much have ONE PSB if you were to combine the output from 1, 2 & 4.

TV3 doesn't even come close (unless you define UK talentless shows as PSB and define Xpose's gossip as current "affairs").
