Hi folks, a slow day on the Music Production forum.

What's everybody up to at the moment musically?

Are ye on course to do all the things you set out to do this year?

I'm still working on learning Logic Pro. I still have an awful lot to learn.

Hi NJ, I just had a listen. That's a really big sound, very powerful. Interesting mix of guitars and electronica.

Did you play on any of the three songs?

    Excellent.

Nothing better than looking at other peoples gear. It's like sitting by the fire on a cold winters evening.

I didn't play, just helped arrange and focus the tracks - then engineered/mastered - the first one is 100% (as far as it gets) - the others are a bit weaker and have another 2 coming this week.

dont bother tuning the 909 kick. high pass it a bit (i usually go up to about 150 with a shallow roll off) and use it as the "attack" of the kick drum and then use an 808 underneath tuned to the bassline.

    Yeah.

Or you could just do what I do, get frustrated storm out of the room. Come back an hour later and start a new song:D

I've been asked to get the Final Cut Pro trainer qualification because 2 trainers have moved on recently. One to Channel 4 and one to Setanta.
I have to learn the software inside out from never having used it by the middle of June. I am going to do the 5 day course at home start to finish as many times as possible before the trainer course in London.
I am currently half way through for the first time.
I was recording "I Phoenix" Saturday and Sunday. 2 songs that are going to be mastered by Fergal Davis on Wednesday. I will post a link when they are done.

my uncle has a shop in the shopping centre involved and has been there for a long time so knows the management very well and he told them i make music and could more than likely do up something for them. i've studied music for the last 5 half years in college so should be able to come up with something!! and plus being able to play alot of instruments helps alot too! do it mostly with midi with a bit of audio samples thrown in!

not sure what the story is with copyright, i think you would set a price for them and they would be buying the copyright off you for that, but as its the first one im doing, im just doing it for experience and know how of how things are run!! :D:pac:

    Very nice.

I don't have a desk, I do all my mixing "in the box" as they say. I am wondering what the benefits are of having one? Any advise would be greatly appreciated appreciated.

Handy contact to have. How many songs/pieces of music will you be handing over? No doubt they will want at least a couple of hours worth of stuff.

no they only want a 30 second jobby to be able to put up with a voice over as far as im aware, i've sent them 3 different types as demo's to see what they think and will hopefully get feedback sometime soon with what they want or dont want ya know!!

So my stuff would be no good. I usually have a 6 minute intro. Mostly feedback and crash cymbals:D

Hope it goes well for you.

You're a busy man. That's a very short time span to do that training and pass those exams. Maybe that's why the other guys fecked off:D

Best of luck with the exams and the recordings.

well all it is with a jingle is something to catch the attention of the listener, something that in a short space of time will stick in their heads, kinda like a hook in a song! so thats why you want something of that length!

hopefully it will go well anyway!!

Tomorrow 4 of the others in my band are coming down to give my home studio its first real test, We should have vocals, drums, guitar and bass tracked by tomorrow night. Just guitars and keys to do next week, and some glock too (can't forget the glock). Hopefully by Sunday week we'll have a fair few songs ready for public consumption.

I Phoenix are pretty cool, Trackmix, gigged with them a while back. How are they sounding?

Well FREE is way to little anyway..... :(

I go by the saying "nothing costs under 500 quid" the whole thing depends on if its a buy out, or if you can licence it for a year etc.. etc...

most of the radio stuff is buy outs now, unless its gonna be for TV too, where you can get different deals....

For a shopping centre, ?!? bit of a guessing game, you need to build up your work so do a fair price but dont under value yourself ;)

when I do a radio jingle / Ident etc.. its usually always between 800-1500 when solely for radio, sometimes more some but usually always in that ball park, if the company is going for TV too it will jump to 3,4,5, 10k + depending where its going to be used

Remember if you need vocalists, ie: female, diff styles etc... theyre not free either ;) cost it in....

try and remember that not everyone can do this stuff, a plumber wont work for free, so why should you?!?

    Good luck with it :D

Copyright isn't ever sold - it's licensed out on a one off basis (usually called a 'license') - you retain the copyright for 70 odd years (the music is your intellectual property for that period). You can however assign the handling of your copyright by another person, this can be fatal ;) - a license for use for a period of time or use in a particular situation is best - a computer game for example would be licensed for use for JUST that game and any advertising related with it over the whole world - then the company you license it too can use it in whatever is related to that project and nothing else.
