I have a jailbroken iPod Touch with 1.1.3 firmware. I haven't updated it in a very long time because I was travelling for months. Since I got back I have successfully used iTunes and rejigged my music etc.

Today, I plugged the iPod into the computer and found that iTunes wouldn't recognise it. I searched around the web and eventually decided to try and restore the iPod. Unfortunately, I got the "unknown error 1604" message and now the iPod is sort of in limbo. When I turn it on, I get the image of a cable and iTunes icon.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Hold the power and home button for 10 seconds, the release the power button and keep hold of the home button. This will put the unit in restore mode and let iTunes re-install the firmware. Make sure the iPod is connected to the computer while doing this.

Also you will lose all personal info, music etc. on the ipod.

Yep that's what I did. iTunes went though the restoring process but I got that error telling me the iPod couldn't be restored.

Make sure you are putting the ipod in DFU mode.
It can be confusing but the standard restore mode is different, Restoring via DFU should solve your probloms

God dammit! Got into DFU mode (well, I think I did as I pressed all the buttons correctly and heard all the sounds I was supposed to) but when I went to restore the iPod it had thte "preparing iPod for restore" status bar up for ages and then gave me the same "unknown error 1604".

    Bugger.

Will I have to take this back to Apple? Did I void my warranty when I jailbroke the iPod?

    Yes, fixed it!

So, I did what bluemachavel suggested (thanks for that) but also had to delete a file as described in this thread:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1245008
    For PC users
1 run cmd to get your DOS operating system
    2 type " cd windows "
    3 type cd program files
    4 type cd itunes
    5 type dir
6 look for itunes update file and delte it
    or just type
    7 del itunes update*.dll
8 run itunes then plug in your ipod touch and try to restore with that ***** file deleted

    That worked for me!
