Also, a motor bike is a bit of an unfair advantage on the morning cycles...

Yeah I think I really should get out after skipping two spins this weekend. Missing all this weather is criminal.

I'd be totally in if I had one bike that was complete, but I've two in states on disrepair/almost repair :(

I seem to recall you saying the same thing on Friday. Just how long does it take you to build a bike?

See above. I'd expect it from Tiny, not from you. Get wrenching.

If I had all the bits, it'd be built now, but have been let down by Wiggle sending me the wrong pedals (though I could take the ones of the Focus), but most importantly, CRC didn't deliver my front derailleur Braise on adaptor within the 24hrs I paid for, so I can't get the FD on till at least Tuesday now

Surely it's rideable without a FD - what's wrong with the big ring anyway?

Riding a pink bike in the small ring is just wrong. Or too right.

What size adapter do you need? I've two at home and might have your size. Won't know till tonight as I'm still in Spain.

    *cough* no *cough*

You are right that the sooner I join a club the quicker I can work on getting better, but I don't know where my job-hunt will lead me, probably Galway or Cork if I'm lucky, maybe further afield if I am not.

See you tomorrow then, I will leave the route up to you, I owe you after dragging you back from the Sally Gap during that miserable gale.

Wrenching is what got me into this mess! Unless you can tell me where I can procure two M6 x 19mm bolts on Easter Sunday (or very early on a bank holiday monday morning) then I'm down to a single bike - the fixie.

Tiny, what's wrong with the focus? Cannibalised? You must have enough bits to make one functional bicycle, no?

34.9mm one for SRAM FD... if you have one, give me shout, would be fab

Would the bolts on the focus work? If not you're welcome to take the crankset for a couple of days?

Focus has been fairly extensively cannibalised to be not worth putting back together for one spin tomorrow.

What are they for? M6 is narrower than M5 right?

OK. I've a 34.9mm one that came with the Cinelli. I think it works for both Shimano and Campag deraileurs. In fact, the standard should be universal, right? Because otherwise some groups wouldn't work with frames with brazes.

For the pinch bolts that hold the left crank on (and thereby hold everything together down there).

I think M6 is thicker than M5. The number is the diameter of the threads, and M just means metric. I can't find reliable info on the TPI of the bolts I need either so I'm having to get them for a shimano dealer. If i could I'd get them from a generic parts supplier as I'm fairly convinced that the shimano design for the heads is poor. There's not enough material around the hex hole to stop deformation even under the recommended torque, and so the interwebs has many a tale of woe about rounded heads and unremovable cranks. I got them off, but if I tighten those bolts up again they're going to have to be drilled out. Annoying.

And because i did about 100k with them too loose yesterday I think I may have damaged the splines on the inside of the crank arm (where it meets the spindle) and done permanent damage.

You can cannibalise Mrs Tonto's bike till you get sorted out. She's got the same cranks as you.

If it's any consolation, I've done the same to FSA cranks. I think it's a fault in the design. So if you are ordering bolts, I might take a few as well.

Right, I've got to go the airport, but if either of you two need help ring/text me.

Isn't this forum great? Good people around here. :)

Thanks guys - I ordered 4 new bolts last night so I think I can hang on till they arrive. There was always going to be a transitional period of bikelessness while I moved stuff over to the new frame so this little snafu is just part of that...

    Enjoy your spin though.

In my googling I discovered a place where you can find just about any diameter and standard of bolt in Ti. Weight weenies take note. Tiny - how do you think Pinkie would look with purple haze ti hardware?

    OUT ... entertaining the family.

I think the purple would be a lil ott, but I wouldn't mind some Ti bolts :)

Maplin may have what you need, but dunno when/if they're open in the morning

Tom, do you want me to take a look at your bike for you? Often I find that if you give the derailleur a good wahck with a hammer it works wonders. Or if you don't have a hammer, a decent-sized rock.

Wow, that weather looks ridiculously crap compared with yesterday. Is this still on?

EDIT: Hmm...I don't have El Tonto's number, can anyone help me out?

Did an utterly pitiful 34km today. Wasn't feeling great going up Stocking Lane and when the wind (and what a wind!) hit at the top it didn't help, so I turned tail after a bit. Descent was fun though.

Myself and the Claw went over Bohernabreena and around the lakes. Windy and much colder than I expected, but at least we got home before the rain.

Wicklow 100 Dry Run… (Anything but!!)

Will be out of the country for the Wicklow 200/100, so was contemplating doing the 100 on a trial run to gauge my level of fitness, endurance, etc. So Easter Sun. night I thought to myself "what the hell, give it a bash tomorrow". Anyway due to family commitments, I didn't get going until around 2pm. Started at the Montrose hotel as the back gate to UCD was locked, and rejoined the route at the Goat Grill.

At Kilternan I was met with a sheet of horizontal rain :( and thought, OK pack it in, just get to Enniskerry and head back. At Enniskerry with no improvement in weather conditions I decided, in for a penny...etc. get as far as Roundwood and turn around. Said the same thing at Annamoe....same thing at Laragh...... and thought "I've come this far", so pushed on to Rathdrum like a wet rag at this stage. Was on a bit of a high on the return through Moneystown back to Roundwood :). Saw one car with bike rack at Ballinastoe, I think they passed me later at The Scalp returning to Dublin. Apart from those MTB'rs, only saw one other roadie heading to Roundwood from Annamoe as I was heading south. Anyone else crazy enough to be in Wicklow on Mon?

Anyway, did the route which was 111.32Km in just over 5 hrs, off which I could have shaved a bit had I not taken the wrong turn at the R763 Junction at Tomriland. Turned left instead of straight through staggered xroads. Ended up on the road to Ashford, only realised when passing the gates to Tiglin adventure centre. That U turn added about 7Km on to the total. Ended up with mild saddle rash :o which copious amounts of Sudocreme helped to relieve!!

Not posting this to brag, but just to say to anyone out there still in the “will I/wont I” frame of mind, if I can do it on that muck of a day on a flat bar hybrid with 28C tyres, anyone with a half decent training regime over the last few months should have no trouble with the 100 or maybe even the 200. You will have the added benefit of better weather (fingers crossed), support of riding in a group, mechanical backup, refreshment stops, etc. etc.

So, to anyone still undecided I’d say go for it!

Did the Howth thing as well.Left at 3.40.A little bit drizzly. Not long after started to lash and realised I was gonna have a faceful of rain and headwind all the way to Howth AGAIN.got into the frame of mind that well I am gonna get wet so just get it over with.Hit the bottom of Sutton Strand shattered but did it and enjoyed the tailwind home.
God bless Gore-Tex jackets and Endura overshoes. My feet were soaked but warm.

Good man Jimm; I did exactly that, but started near enough to ten that morning, so I didn't hit the rain til just outside Roundwood on the way to Annamoe.

There's something heroic in battling your way through the elements in manky weather, provided you're wearing the gear for it - the thinking goes, "if I can do it in this miserable downpour, I can do it anytime."

I'd forgotten how out of shape I was; by the time I had ground my way to Moneystown, the thought of any major hill between there and home would've been anough to flatten me. The Shay Elliott; jeeeyaaaaysiissss. Good old Djouce was grand though, but that f*&!ing "wall" between Charleville Demesne and Enniskerry was as nasty as ever!

    See you for the W200...
