This question will be bread and butter type stuff for most of you guys but certainly not for me.

Right, my 2 young lads are thinking of buying a PS3 and I heard them say that 1 or 2 of the versions dont play the PS2 games. Is this correct? Its just that they have loads of PS2 games and would want to continue playing them.

What version or model should they be looking for and is there anything else any of you would recommend they should watch out for before they go off spending their hard saved pocket money.

    Thanks in advance.

Only 1 version plays the PS2 games, this was the 60gb version. This is only available 2nd hand nowadays,Adverts.ie always has them popping up.

    http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=74259&cat=12

It had the backwards compatibility,Sony got rid of this in later models,ie.40,80 and 160 GB to save money.

    My advice?keep the PS2 and get a new PS3

    Thanks for the reply jackncoke.

They will be keeping the PS2 console in any event but I suppose they were hoping to buy something that was "compatible" with the PS2 games instead of having to buy new games for a PS3.

I suppose they would be better off with a 80 Gb at least?

I "think" they dont sell the 40gb anymore,

The difference between the 80gb and 160gb is obviously the hard drive size and the fact that the 160gb came with 4 free PSN (downloadable) games.

I myself have a 40gb version which I upgraded to 320gb easily enough,I use it quite regularly for video and music playback.

Keep an eye on this forum and bargain alerts for people posting offers regarding the PS3,

And am I right in thinking ur up North? You'll have no prob getting a bargain ... :D

Yeah Im in Donegal but very close to the Tyrone/Derry border so should be able to get one a bit cheaper in Strabane or Derry. Theres usually around 10% - 20% savings to be made in purchasing stuff for example in Argos in Strabane as opposed to the Argos store in Letterkenny and there's only about a 15 minute drive between them.

There's always places like Game, HMV, Asda, Dixons/Currys, PC World etc where things can be got at a decent price given the favourable exchange rate at the moment.

I'll keep an eye out as suggested for anything that may be posted up here or over in Adverts.

    Thanks again for the advice.

You can upgrade the hard drive yourself, the PS3 uses a standard 2.5 inch SATA hard drive. I have a 320gb HD in mine. The extra space comes in handy.

They were hoping not to buy too many PS3 games for now anyhow and possibly sell the PS2 console but yes you're right, they are better off just holding on to the older console.

Thats good to know. Shall pass that info on should the need arise.

Thanks again for the replies guys
