Help! IS200 timing belt failed after 20,000miles

    Hi Guys and gals,

    I need some advice,

My timing belt failed after only 20,000miles (30,000km) It was fitted by a main dealer over two years ago. Not sure how much damage was done yet, I have to wait until after the bank holiday.

I guess my question is, should I tell the garage I expect the work to be done FOC or for a heavy discount or has that ship sailed? It looks like its going to be expensive but I paid almost E500 to get the belt changed in a timely fashion. (100,000km)

Do I have a leg to stand on if I ask them to take on the repairs?

Was the belt just replaced, or was the tensioner done as well,? Did you hear any abnormal noises from the engine in the last few days?.

The tensioner was done aswell. Didn't hear anything unusual at all until I lost power.

Maybe its not the belt then, if it is, you won't know until its stripped to find out what happened.

I would be very surprize if it was a failure of the belt only having covered 20,000 miles.

If it was only the belt at fault and if you had the car continually services with a dealer thereby having verified miles etc, they would possibly cover it. The problem is that it is surely something on your car that has led to the early failure of the belt and so it is not their problem. A dodgy pulley could cause the belt to start to run off and get damaged at the edges. Something like that is most likely the cause and no a direct fault of the structure of the belt.
Best thing to do is see what caused the problem. If it was a tensioner failure and you have paid to have it replaced 20,000 miles ago, I wouldnt be paying for anything.

I agree with Mickdw. More than likely it wasnt the belts fault. It was prob down to a tensioner. I just done a belt on an IS200 on thursday and it was shredded up to pieces and on the verge of snapping. All due to the tensioner being fitted incorrectly the last time the belt was done. Dunno how it lasted so long without snapping TBH!!!!

Just make sure the last place fitted a whole kit rather than just a belt. If they didnt fit a kit and it was down to a failed tensioner then they should be held responsible for not doing their job properly.
